Position Purpose
The Assistant Store Director supports the Store Director in leading all aspects of store operations to ensure exceptional customer service, operational excellence, sales growth, profitability, and employee development. This position provides daily leadership for store operations, partners with department managers to achieve business objectives, develops future leaders, and helps create a safe, productive, and customer-focused environment. The Assistant Store Director assumes responsibility for store operations in the absence of the Store Director.
Key Responsibilities Store Operations
- Assist in overseeing daily store operations to ensure company standards and expectations are consistently achieved.
- Support execution of company initiatives, operational programs, and strategic objectives.
- Monitor department performance and ensure operational readiness throughout the store.
- Partner with department managers to maintain high standards of merchandising, inventory management, and customer service.
- Serve as Manager-on-Duty as assigned and provide leadership across all store departments.
- Assume responsibility for overall store operations in the absence of the Store Director.
Customer Service
- Promote and model a customer-first culture throughout the store.
- Ensure customers receive friendly, efficient, and exceptional service.
- Respond to and resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Monitor customer satisfaction and work with department leaders to improve service performance.
- Foster an environment that supports customer loyalty and repeat business.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop department managers, supervisors, and associates.
- Support recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and retention efforts.
- Provide ongoing performance feedback and accountability.
- Assist in identifying and developing future leaders through training and succession planning.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, engagement, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
- Support execution of company training and development programs.
Sales & Merchandising
- Support achievement of store sales, profit, and customer service goals.
- Ensure merchandising programs, promotional displays, and seasonal events are executed according to company standards.
- Monitor sales trends and partner with department leaders to capitalize on business opportunities.
- Ensure product availability, pricing accuracy, signing, and presentation standards are maintained.
- Drive accountability for operational and merchandising execution throughout the store.
Financial Accountability
- Assist in managing store labor, expenses, shrink, and profitability.
- Monitor operational and financial performance metrics.
- Support development and execution of action plans to improve sales and financial results.
- Ensure labor resources are aligned with customer and operational needs.
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency, and profit performance.
Operational Excellence
- Ensure compliance with company operating procedures, standards, and expectations.
- Monitor workflow and productivity throughout the store.
- Support inventory management, shrink reduction, and asset protection initiatives.
- Partner with department leaders to improve execution and operational efficiency.
- Ensure store facilities, equipment, and work areas are maintained properly.
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with company policies, food safety standards, workplace safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
- Promote a safe environment for customers and employees.
- Support accident prevention and workplace safety programs.
- Ensure incidents are properly documented and addressed.
- Assist with emergency preparedness and store security procedures.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and compliance.
Community & Store Leadership
- Represent the company and store professionally within the community.
- Support community involvement efforts and company-sponsored events.
- Build positive relationships with customers, associates, vendors, and business partners.
- Promote company values, diversity, inclusion, and ethical business practices.
- Serve as a role model for professionalism, integrity, and leadership.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Previous retail management experience required.
- Grocery retail leadership experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of store operations, merchandising, customer service, and financial management.
- Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop teams.
- Strong communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in scheduling, reporting, and operational systems.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of merchandise up to company standards.
- Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing, and stretching.
- Ability to work in various store environments, including refrigerated and freezer areas.
- Ability to safely operate store equipment and assist departments as needed.
- Availability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
