The Pueblo of Nambé, or Nanbé Owingeh, is one of the six Tewa-speaking pueblos of the northern Rio Grande region. It is located about 15 miles north of Santa Fe, at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
We are looking for an Director to lead our Department of Environment and Natural Resources team. In this role you'll work with tribal leaders, community members, and staff to develop and implement strategic plans for Natural Resources — all while supporting a vibrant Pueblo community. This is on onsite role in the office of the Governor.
What you'll do
- Establishes, implements, and communicates management and environmental protection goals, objectives, policies and procedures in accordance with strategic plans.
- Increases management's effectiveness by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, counseling, and disciplining managers; communicating values, strategies, and objectives; assigning accountabilities; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; developing a climate for offering opinions; integrating functional objectives; providing and participating in educational opportunities.
- Assures effective and efficient implementation of grant monies and assures program compliance with policies and regulations imposed by funding sources.
- Contributes to the organization's effectiveness by offering information and opinion as a member of executive management team; integrating objectives with other functions; accomplishing related results as needed.
- Coordinates and negotiates with federal and state agencies on restoration projects and contracts; works with congressional delegation regarding priority legislative issues affecting the Pueblo.
- Oversees and participates in environmental sampling, monitoring and/or data collection activities for air, soil and water quality, and waste programs in accordance with accepted procedures as identified in the Quality Assurance Project Plan and other federal and tribal guidelines.
- Prepares and presents reports on the status, activities, and plans for current and future operations to the Governor, Tribal Council, Tribal Administration, or required personnel; prepares tribal council resolutions.
- Secures additional funding for the continuation and expansion of program services.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What we're looking for
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Biology, or related field plus management experience administering natural resources programs, required. Master's degree and EPA certification preferred
- Soft skills: Knowledge of local and regional environmental and natural resource management issues and knowledge of tribal sovereignty issues.
- Other: Valid New Mexico driver's license; must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.
