Shift Leader — BBQ Smokehouse
Overview
We're a family-owned, veteran-owned BBQ smokehouse that's been serving this valley for 17 years. We're looking for a Shift Leader who can run a shift start to finish — open or close the building, direct the line and counter, solve problems on the floor, and hold the standard when the owner isn't there.
This is a working leadership role. You'll be on the line and behind the counter alongside your crew, not standing back watching. The job is for someone who's reliable enough to trust with keys and money, calm enough to handle a rush and an unhappy guest in the same five minutes, and direct enough to correct a teammate without making it personal.
Responsibilities
- Open and close the building: alarm, safe, cash drawers, deposits, and end-of-day reconciliation
- Direct the crew during your shift — assign stations, adjust for volume, cover gaps
- Work the line and counter as needed; you're a producing member of the team, not overhead
- Monitor smoker output, hold times, and product levels; make the call on what to pull and what to hold
- Enforce food safety and cleanliness standards; complete temp logs and shift checklists
- Handle guest complaints and comps within your authority; escalate what's above it
- Manage catering and large to-go orders through pickup
- Train and coach new team members on stations and standards
- Report equipment issues, product shortages, and staffing problems to ownership promptly
- Track waste and portioning; flag yield problems before they become cost problems
Requirements
- Maricopa County Food Handler Card (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire)
- Prior restaurant experience, including at least some in a lead, key, or supervisory capacity
- Trustworthy with keys, cash, and the safe — background check required
- Genuinely reliable attendance; the shift doesn't start without you
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, stand a full shift, and work near hot equipment
- Weekend and holiday availability
Preferred, Not Required
- BBQ, smokehouse, deli, or butcher shop experience
- Food Manager Certification (ServSafe or equivalent) — we'll help you get it if you don't have it
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- Experience with inventory, ordering, or scheduling
