Social Skills Teacher - Autism Specialty
Position Summary: Provide specialized instruction in an individualized program at a private therapeutic day school for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Emphasis is on enhancing communication skills, modeling strong social skills, and providing meaningful peer-to-peer interactions and activities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Speech Language, or related field.
- Experience teaching children with Autism preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Plan social skills lessons for students with a range of abilities.
- Create a safe and welcoming environment.
- Implement evidence-based social skills strategies for individual and group Social Skills Classes.
- Effectively work with a large team of professionals to coordinate services, assess abilities, and problem-solve behavioral strategies for students.
- Work in conjunction with the Speech Language therapist to address social/communication IEP goals.
- Supervise teacher assistants, assigning roles and responsibilities during class time.
- Follow student behavior intervention plans and record behavior data.
- Provide written progress reports quarterly.
- Collect and analyze student data to monitor progress.
- Participate in staff development trainings that focus on working with students with Autism.
- Must have no physical limitations. Candidate must have mobility and be able to lift at least 25 pounds. He/She must be able to participate in the CPI model of physical restraint.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
- Knowledge of autism and proven skill in implementing best practices related to the instruction and behavior management of students with autism.
- Knowledge of Social/emotional development.
- Knowledge of and skill in implementing differentiated instruction based on student data and needs.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, administrators,
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff and outside therapists.
