Head Baker
Engagement Type: Full-Time and Part-Time available
Pay: $18.00–$22.00 per hour, based on experience
Schedule: Morning shifts with flexible hours available. Some weekend availability preferred.
1. Position Summary
We are looking for an Head Baker to support daily baking operations at Oma’s Deli. This role will lead in preparation, dough production, baking, finishing baked goods, cleaning, and other kitchen tasks needed to ensure consistent quality and smooth morning production. This is a great opportunity for someone with commercial baking experience who enjoys early morning work, takes pride in quality and consistency, and wants a flexible schedule in a growing food service environment. This position will be able to give input on our menu, recipes, and specials.
The Head Baker will maintain production standards, support food safety practices, and contribute to a respectful, team-oriented workplace. The ideal candidate is reliable, organized, able to follow recipes and production instructions, and comfortable working in a hands-on bakery and kitchen environment.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Daily prep, dough production, baking, finishing, packaging, and display of baked goods.
- Prepare ingredients, measure recipes, mix doughs, shape products, monitor proofing, and support baking according to established procedures.
- Ensure baked goods are produced consistently, on schedule, and in accordance with quality standards.
- Production of breads, pastries, rolls, desserts, seasonal items, and other bakery products as assigned.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and food-safe bakery work area throughout the shift.
- Wash, sanitize, and store tools, pans, equipment, and work surfaces according to company procedures.
- Follow food safety, sanitation, labeling, storage, and allergen-awareness practices.
- Communicate product shortages, quality concerns, equipment issues, ingredient needs, or production delays to management.
- Stocking ingredients, rotating inventory, reducing waste, and keeping bakery supplies organized.
- Work cooperatively with kitchen, deli, retail, and service staff to support daily operations.
- Follow instructions carefully while also being willing to learn new recipes, processes, and bakery techniques.
- Support special orders, catering, events, festivals, seasonal promotions, and high-volume production as needed.
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, professionalism, and a positive attitude during early morning shifts.
3. Requirements
3.1 Key Qualifications
Experience: Previous commercial baking experience is highly preferred. Experience in a bakery, restaurant, deli, café, catering kitchen, or similar food production environment is helpful.
Baking Skills: Able to do prep work, dough production, baking, finishing, and basic bakery production tasks.
Reliability: Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work scheduled early morning shifts consistently.
Teamwork: Able to work cooperatively with management, kitchen staff, and service staff in a fast-paced environment.
Attention to Detail: Able to follow recipes, measurements, production instructions, timing requirements, and quality standards.
Food Safety: Willing and able to follow food safety, sanitation, personal hygiene, storage, labeling, and workplace safety procedures.
Communication: Able to communicate clearly about production needs, ingredient shortages, equipment issues, quality concerns, and schedule availability.
Availability: Must be available for early morning shifts. Greater flexibility on exact shift hours can be discussed. Some weekend shifts will be required.
3.2 Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of commercial baking, bakery production, restaurant prep, or similar food production experience.
- Experience working with dough production, bread, rolls, pastries, cakes, cookies, desserts, or other baked goods.
- Experience using commercial bakery or kitchen equipment such as mixers, ovens, proofers, scales, slicers, or other food production tools.
- Food handler certification, ServSafe certification, or willingness to obtain required food safety training after hire.
- Interest in German breads, pastries, desserts, deli products, or traditional food preparation.
- Ability to support occasional catering, festival, seasonal, or special event production.
3.3 Work Environment
This position requires hands-on work in a bakery, kitchen, deli, retail, and event environment. Work may include standing for extended periods, lifting and carrying ingredients or supplies, using commercial kitchen equipment, working near ovens and hot surfaces, washing dishes and tools, moving through kitchen and service areas, and performing repetitive prep and production tasks.
The Head Baker should be comfortable working early morning shifts and supporting production timelines. Schedule may vary based on business needs and may include weekdays, weekends, holidays, festivals, catering orders, special events, and seasonal production periods.
4. Compensation and Benefits
4.1 Compensation
The expected starting pay range for this position is $18.00 to $22.00 per hour, based on experience, availability, baking skills, reliability, and business needs. Final compensation will be determined by the company based on qualifications and assigned responsibilities.
4.2 Incentive Participation Programs
The Assistant Baker may be eligible for discretionary incentive opportunities if approved by ownership. Any bonus, event-related incentive, or other incentive program will be subject to company policy, business performance, individual performance, and ownership approval.
4.3 Benefits
