Job Title: Staff Accountant
Reports To: Chief School Financial Officer
Job Goal: To assist the Chief School Financial Officer (CSFO) in administering the business and financial administration function of the school system.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or equivalent accounting and/or bookkeeping experience
- Work experience in governmental accounting preferred
- Knowledge of budgeting, financial statements, accounting/bookkeeping duties and responsibilities
- Computer skills, data entry, and experience with accounting software
- Task oriented and service oriented work habits
- Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of the assigned task
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable
Performance Responsibilities:
- Assist the CSFO in all areas of the financial operation of the school system
- Responsible for reconciling all recorded entries in individual journals and ledgers, as well as the transfer of payroll and accounting data to the Journals and General Ledgers
- Assist with the accountability of all fixed assets and inventories
- Assist with local school audits and provide documentation of findings
- Assist with the preparation of financial statements, income statements, and other financial reports reflecting the financial condition of the Orange Beach City Schools Board of Education
- Trace errors, correct entries, and record approved adjustments to maintain accurate accounting records
- Assist in the year-end close process including preparation of year-end financial statements, W-2’s and 1099’s
- Assists the CSFO with training and resourcing the bookkeepers, directors, and principals
- Assists with the ongoing development and updating of the Accounting Manual
- Be knowledgeable and versatile in the accounting software used by the Accounting Department
- Recommends improvements in the accounting system or procedures system-wide; alerting the CSFO when appropriate, to potential problems
- Participate in cross-training for any other types of accounting, payroll, or other finance related duties and tasks as needed
- Maintain the confidentiality of the Orange Beach City Schools Board of Education
- Be regular and punctual in attendance
- Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system
- Supports and complies with school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations
- Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by supervisor(s)
Terms of Employment/Salary: 12 month (240 Days) / Exempt / To be determined, commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.
Evaluation: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified/Classified Personnel.
