Position Summary
The Ice Cream Production Operations Specialist is a highly skilled, cross-functional production position responsible for supporting daily manufacturing operations across multiple production departments and filling in for department leads as operational needs require.
This position supports production planning, employee direction, quality monitoring, food safety, sanitation, production documentation, equipment operation, and workflow coordination throughout the manufacturing process.
Serving as a senior technical resource above the Production Associate level, this role helps maintain production flow, supports department leadership, and ensures operational standards are consistently followed.
Key Responsibilities
Production Operations & Department Support
- Support production operations across mixing, pasteurization, processing, filling, packaging, sanitation, and related manufacturing areas as assigned
- Fill in for department leads or senior operators to maintain production schedules and operational continuity
- Review daily production schedules, staffing needs, product priorities, allergen requirements, and equipment readiness at the beginning and end of each shift
- Assist with coordinating employees, ingredients, packaging materials, equipment, and workflow to achieve production goals
- Communicate production delays, equipment issues, staffing concerns, quality issues, and material shortages to management promptly
Lead Relief, Training & Employee Direction
- Provide day-to-day operational guidance to production employees within assigned departments
- Assist with employee training on production procedures, GMPs, SSOPs, food safety requirements, documentation, and equipment operation
- Reinforce compliance with company policies, sanitation procedures, allergen controls, safety standards, and quality expectations
- Provide break and lunch relief for production employees as assigned
- Escalate attendance, performance, conduct, safety, and HR-related concerns to management rather than taking disciplinary action independently
Food Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Follow all GMPs, HACCP requirements, CCPs, SQF policies, SSOPs, allergen control procedures, and company policies
- Monitor production activities to ensure food safety, product quality, sanitation, and regulatory compliance standards are maintained
- Work closely with Quality Assurance and management regarding allergens, production scheduling, lost control, traceability, and cross-contact prevention
- Identify, document, and report food safety, sanitation, quality, or regulatory concerns immediately
- Participate in audits, inspections, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives
Documentation & Production Records
- Complete production paperwork, sanitation records, equipment inspections, lot tracking, ingredient usage records, and production documentation accurately
- Ensure documentation is complete, legible, and compliant with company procedures
- Maintain traceability records, batch documentation, and production reports for assigned departments
- Submit completed documentation and production reports to management as required
Equipment, Sanitation & Continuous Improvement
- Operate assigned production equipment safely and efficiently within training guidelines
- Assist with equipment setup, changeovers, inspections, troubleshooting, routine maintenance checks, and cleaning activities
- Support CIP, COP, manual cleaning procedures, sanitation activities, and pre-operational inspections
- Identify opportunities to improve production efficiency, sanitation, product quality, safety, and operational performance
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe production areas
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 3–5 years of food manufacturing, dairy processing, frozen dessert manufacturing, production lead, or related experience preferred
- Previous experience supporting or directing production employees in a manufacturing environment preferred
- Experience with GMPs, HACCP, SQF, SSOPs, allergen control, sanitation programs, production documentation, and food safety standards preferred
- Experience working across multiple production departments strongly preferred
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of ice cream manufacturing, dairy processing, production operations, sanitation, and food safety principles
- Ability to provide operational direction while appropriately escalating employee matters to management
- Excellent communication, organization, problem-solving, and follow-through skills
- Ability to read and interpret production schedules, formulas, batch records, SOPs, and production specifications
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to recognize equipment issues and operational inefficiencies
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations involving weights, measures, fractions, decimals, production yields, and batch quantities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook preferred
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provide operational direction, workflow coordination, employee training, and lead relief within assigned production areas
- This position does not independently perform disciplinary actions, hiring decisions, scheduling, performance evaluations, or other management functions unless specifically authorized by management
Physical Demands
- Frequently lift up to 55 pounds
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday
- Work around production machinery, moving equipment, wet floors, refrigerated processing areas, and manufacturing equipment
- Assist with equipment setup, ingredient handling, product staging, sanitation activities, and production support
- Work overtime and extended shifts as operational needs require
Work Environment
- Dairy processing and ice cream manufacturing facility
- Exposure to wet, humid, refrigerated, and temperature-controlled production areas
- Occasional exposure to freezer and cold-storage environments
- Exposure to dairy ingredients, allergens, sanitation chemicals, and cleaning products
- Fast-paced manufacturing environment with changing production priorities
Work Schedule
Full-time, non-exempt position. Work schedules may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and seasonal production demands based on business needs.
