The Foreign Coin Numismatist will specialize in identifying, evaluating, attributing, and cataloging world coins and currency for upcoming auctions. This position requires broad knowledge of foreign and ancient coinage, strong research skills, close attention to detail, and the ability to accurately assess authenticity, condition, rarity, and market value. Candidates should have at least three years of hands-on experience collecting, buying, selling, trading, or professionally evaluating foreign coins.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately identify and attribute foreign coins and currency by country, issuing authority, denomination, date, mint, variety, and condition
- Research unfamiliar or specialized pieces using reliable numismatic references and auction archives
- Evaluate authenticity and identify potential counterfeits, alterations, cleaned coins, and other condition concerns
- Grade and value foreign coins using current market data, pricing resources, and comparable auction results
- Write detailed, accurate, and marketable descriptions for auction listings
- Organize, photograph, and prepare items for cataloging and sale
- Evaluate individual coins, bulk accumulations, and complete foreign collections
- Assist senior numismatists with consignments, collection purchases, and auction curation
- Communicate effectively with customers and consignors regarding their submissions
- Stay current on international coin markets, auction results, collector demand, and pricing trends
- Provide occasional assistance with live-stream auctions as needed
Qualifications:
- Minimum three years of experience collecting, trading, dealing, or evaluating foreign coins (required)
- Strong working knowledge of world coins and currency (required)
- Ability to research and identify coins from a wide range of countries, languages, and historical periods
- Strong understanding of grading, authenticity, rarity, varieties, and market valuation
- Familiarity with PCGS, NGC, and internationally recognized grading standards
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in written descriptions
- Strong organizational, research, and communication skills
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven auction environment
- Ability to work collaboratively and take direction from senior staff
Bonus Points For:
- Advanced expertise in one or more areas, such as Mexican, Latin American, European, British Commonwealth, Asian, Islamic, medieval, or ancient coinage
- Ability to interpret foreign languages, dates, mint marks, legends, and non-Latin alphabets
- Experience submitting world coins to PCGS, NGC, or other grading services
- Previous employment with an auction house, coin shop, grading company, or collectibles business
- Numismatic certifications, professional memberships, or formal training
- Familiarity with Krause references, Numista, specialized catalogs, Greysheet, and major international auction archives
- Experience identifying counterfeits, altered coins, varieties, and rare die pairings
