Overview
Mary Magdalene is a joyful church community rooted in the independent Catholic tradition and committed to inclusion of all (LGBTQIA+ folx, people of all gender expressions and faith backgrounds, diverse spiritualities/ beliefs, etc.). We seek a part-time music director (8-10 hrs per week) to provide music leadership to our Sunday morning Mass, with a focus on drawing out the singing/ participation of the congregation.
Qualifications
- Fluency in piano accompaniment (required).
- Proficiency in choral conducting (required).
- Degree in music (preferred).
- Experience in a church setting (preferred).
- Genuine love for people, and ability to work with people of all backgrounds, spiritualities, and abilities. Enthusiasm for encouraging congregational singing.
- Comfort with inclusive language and theologies, and enthusiasm for Mary Magdalene's values of justice and joy.
- Familiarity with the flow of Catholic liturgy and with a Catholic musical repertoire (specifically the hymnal Gather), or willingness to learn.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the musical aspects of each Sunday service (including choosing and accompanying hymns, accompanying Mass parts that are sung, scheduling volunteer cantors where needed, and selecting anthems and musical meditations as applicable), in collaboration with the pastor.
- Collaborate with the pastor and with volunteer cantors/ musicians in planning appropriate music for seasonal liturgical celebrations such as Advent, Lent, Holy Week, Christmas.
- Provide piano and vocal accompaniment to funerals, weddings, special services, and other occasions as needed.
- Serve as director of the Choir, including conducting their voices at Mass (presently two Sundays per month) and leading a 1-hour rehearsal prior to those services.
- Steward administrative aspects of the music program, including: ensuring printing and streaming licenses are up to date; ensuring piano is tuned and maintained; communicating with sound and livestream team to make sure system is adjusted properly.
- Collaborate with volunteer musicians in the congregation (eg., folk trio, member violinists/ guitarists/ harpists etc.), inviting their participation as appropriate, and recruiting the gifts of new volunteers as they may arise.
Pay: $12,000.00 - $15,000.00 per year
