Run the Yard That Keeps the West Building
Golden Bear Equipment keeps the iron running for The Hays Group, one of California's leading heavy civil and utility construction organizations. Our Caterpillar-dominated fleet runs the full range, from mini excavators up to machines like Cat D6 dozers, 330 excavators, motor graders, wheel loaders, and large paving machines, backed by a truck fleet of low beds, end dumps, and water trucks and a crew truck fleet that keeps our people moving across the West.
We are hiring a Yard Manager to own all of it out of our six acre Yucaipa yard. Every machine, every truck, every pickup, every mechanic, and every square foot of the yard rolls up to this position. This is a working leadership role for someone who knows heavy iron cold and can also run the unglamorous side of a fleet: registrations, insurance claims, DOT compliance, BIT inspections, and keeping the yard tight and compliant with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Classification (Exempt/Non-Exempt): Exempt
What You Will Own
- The entire heavy equipment fleet, plus attachments and small tools: condition, maintenance, repair, and dispatch readiness.
- The entire truck fleet (low beds, end dumps, water trucks) and the entire pickup and vehicle fleet.
- A team of mechanics and the Fleet Manager, who both report directly to you.
- DOT compliance and the BIT program, kept audit ready at all times.
- Registrations and renewals across every vehicle and piece of equipment we own.
- Insurance claims from incident through resolution.
- Yard organization and compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Daily coordination with Dispatch and project superintendents so the field never waits on iron.
- Monthly fleet status and utilization reviews with senior management.
The Deal Breakers
We will be direct about what gets you this job and what does not.
- Caterpillar mechanical experience. You must be able to look at a Cat engine and know up from down. If you cannot diagnose Cat iron, this is not your job, no matter how good your resume looks.
- Elite organization. You will be handed a six acre yard and we expect it run like a showroom: everything findable, everything in its place, nothing expired, nothing out of compliance.
- You take direction well. You will have real authority here, and you will also execute the direction senior management gives you without friction
What Else We Are Looking For
- Verifiable experience running a yard, shop, or fleet for a heavy equipment or heavy civil contractor, or equivalent time as a shop foreman or lead technician ready to step up.
- Working knowledge of DOT and California BIT requirements, or the horsepower to master them fast.
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record. Class A or B CDL is a plus, not a requirement.
- Basic computer skills and clean recordkeeping habits.
- Professional communication with mechanics, drivers, superintendents, and management alike
The Commitment
Equipment does not break on a schedule. This position is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for equipment, truck, and yard emergencies. The pay range reflects that responsibility. Where you land in the range depends on your experience: the top of the range is reserved for candidates with deep, verifiable fleet management and Caterpillar experience.
What We Offer
- $110,000 to $135,000 per year, depending on experience.
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
- Paid time off and paid holidays.
- Retirement plan.
- Company truck or vehicle allowance for yard and fleet duties.
- A stable, family-owned organization that has been building the West since 1991.
How to Apply
Apply with a resume that shows us your Caterpillar experience and the fleets you have run. Tell us the biggest yard or fleet you have managed and what shape it was in when you left it. No recruiters or staffing agencies, please.
