Job Summary
The Part-Time Public Works Employee performs a variety of manual labor and maintenance duties to assist the Street Department in providing safe, clean, and well-maintained public streets, parks, and city-owned properties. This position supports daily operations by assisting with refuse and recycling collection, grounds maintenance, park upkeep, roadway maintenance, and other public works activities as assigned.
Duties
The duties listed below are representative of the work performed and are not intended to be all-inclusive.
- Assist with residential garbage collection along designated routes.
- Assist with the collection of recycling materials throughout the city.
- Mow grass and trim vegetation at city-owned properties, parks, rights-of-way, and other municipal facilities.
- Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of parks, playgrounds, walking trails, and recreational areas.
- Pick up litter and debris from streets, parks, alleys, and other public areas.
- Assist in maintaining roadways, including patching potholes, cleaning storm drains, removing debris, and clearing brush.
- Help maintain city buildings, grounds, and municipal facilities.
- Operate lawn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, and other hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
- Load, unload, and transport materials, equipment, and supplies as needed.
- Assist full-time Public Works employees with seasonal projects, snow removal preparation, and emergency response when requested.
- Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance of assigned equipment and report any mechanical issues.
- Follow all city safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Provide courteous and professional service while interacting with residents.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Street Department Foreman.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License required.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power equipment, and lawn maintenance equipment.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Operate equipment safely while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Working Conditions
This position is performed primarily outdoors and involves exposure to traffic, moving equipment, dust, noise, adverse weather conditions, and other environmental hazards commonly associated with municipal public works operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of public works operations is preferred but not required.
- Ability to safely use municipal equipment and tools.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to perform physically demanding tasks.
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
