Flagger Job Description
Position Summary
The Flagger is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic through and around active construction and utility work zones. This position plays a critical role in maintaining public safety, protecting crew members, and ensuring compliance with traffic control standards and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct traffic safely using hand signals, stop/slow paddles, and other approved traffic control devices.
- Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control zones, including signs, cones, barricades, and other equipment.
- Monitor traffic flow and adjust traffic control as needed to ensure safety and minimize delays.
- Communicate effectively with crew members, equipment operators, and the public.
- Remain alert to changing traffic patterns, weather conditions, and potential hazards.
- Ensure work zones comply with local, state, and federal traffic control regulations.
- Perform routine inspections of traffic control devices to ensure proper placement and condition.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, or damaged equipment to supervisors immediately.
- Assist with general labor duties as needed when traffic control responsibilities allow.
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with motorists and pedestrians.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous flagging or traffic control experience preferred but not required.
- Current flagger certification or the ability to obtain certification as required by state regulations.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions for extended periods.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and work effectively as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Work in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Maintain constant awareness of moving traffic and construction equipment.
- Perform repetitive movements such as lifting, bending, reaching, and signaling.
Work Environment
- Outdoor construction and utility work sites.
- Exposure to moving traffic, construction equipment, dust, noise, and changing weather conditions.
- May require overtime, weekend work, and travel to various job sites based on project needs.
