We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Animal Shelter Assistant Manager to assist the Shelter Manager to oversee the daily operations at our animal shelter. The Assistant Manager also assumes the role of Shelter Manager 2 days a week and/or if the Shelter Manager is off duty..
This role involves assisting the Kennel Manager in managing shelter staff, ensuring the well-being of animals, and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for employees, visitors and adopters.
The successful candidate will have a strong background:
- in animal care & handling, and managerial experience combined with excellent customer service skills.
- interacting with the Veterinarians, other Shelters, and Rescues in the Indiana County area and to a lesser extent, with adjacent communities.
Responsibilities
1. Assume responsibilities of the Shelter Manager two days a week and when the Shelter Manager is not available
2. Assist the Shelter Manager with their duties which include the following:
- Supervise daily shelter operations, including intake, care and adoption of animals
- Oversee and engage in animal care routines such as feeding, cleaning, grooming, training, and medical treatments
- Manage shelter staff of approximately 15 employees and daytime volunteers, assigning tasks and providing training as needed
- Handle animal handling and restraint to ensure safety for both animals and staff
- Assist with dog training sessions and behavioral assessments to improve adoptability
- Coordinate veterinary visits and maintain accurate medical records for all animals
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, including heavy lifting and proper handling techniques
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of shelter facilities
- Engage with visitors, potential adopters, and the community to promote pet adoption programs
- Assist in scheduling of staff
- Monitor physical facility and supply inventories
- Coordinate non-routine decisions with the Kennel Management Committee (KMC)
Qualifications
- Experience working in shelters, kennels or rescue organization, and management
- Experience interacting with Veterinarians, other Shelters, Rescues in the region
- Knowledge of dog training, pet grooming, and veterinary technician skills
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with the public, and staff
- Physical ability to perform heavy lifting and stand for extended periods during shifts
- Compassionate attitude towards dogs & cats and all animals and their well-being
