Position Overview
Brighter Futures Chicago is seeking motivated and reliable Political Canvassers to join our field team based in Chicago, Illinois. Canvassers are the frontline of our campaign, speaking directly with voters at their doors to share key messaging, increase voter turnout, and build grassroots support for our slate of endorsed candidates for the Chicago School Board.
This is a great opportunity for anyone passionate about political engagement, community advocacy, or gaining hands-on field experience in electoral campaigns.
Key Responsibilities
- Door-to-Door Engagement: Launch daily from our Back of the Yards office to knock on designated turfs, engaging voters in direct, meaningful conversations about campaign initiatives and candidates.
- Data Collection: Accurately record voter feedback, support levels, and contact details using field management software (e.g., MiniVAN) on a smartphone.
- Voter Education: Inform community members about election dates, polling locations, and Brighter Futures endorsed slate of candidates for the Chicago School Board.
- Team Participation: Attend pre-shift briefings and post-shift debriefs at the Back of the Yards office, as well as ongoing field strategy training.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Location & Travel: Reliable transportation to report to our office in Back of the Yards, Chicago, for daily shift launches and debriefs. A valid driver’s license and an operating vehicle is not necessary, but is a plus.
- Communication Skills: Ability to speak clearly, listen actively, and engage comfortably with strangers from diverse backgrounds. Fluency in Spanish is a big plus.
- Physical Ability: Willingness and capability to walk outdoors for 4 hours at a time in various weather conditions. Ability to carry a pack of literature and walk up and down flights of stairs regularly.
- Technology: Possession of a working smartphone (iOS or Android) with a cellular plan to run canvassing applications.
- Reliability: Punctual, reliable, and committed to completing assigned 4-hour shifts consistently.
- Attitude: Results-oriented mindset with a positive approach to civic engagement and community outreach.
- Prior canvassing, political campaign, customer service, or retail experience is a plus, but not required.
Schedule & Hours
- Total Weekly Hours: 20 hours per week.
- Shift Breakdown: Five (5) 4-hour shifts per week.
- Flexibility: Evening and weekend availability required. Alternative schedules available based on need.
Pay: $22.00 per hour
