We are a top-tier FedEx Ground Contractor in Hagerstown, MD. We pride ourselves on safety, efficiency, and maintaining an elite team of professional drivers. We don't just run routes; we set the standard for excellence on the road.
We are seeking a high-energy, hands-on Operations Manager to lead our driving team, oversee fleet maintenance, and serve as the critical daily liaison between our operations and FedEx terminal management.
Position Overview
This is not a remote, desk-bound corporate job. You will be on the ground, in the FedEx yard and tractor parking lot at least 5 days a week, interacting directly with drivers, inspecting equipment, and keeping our fleet moving safely and on time. You will report directly to the Director of Operations.
What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)
Driver Leadership & Communication: Act as the primary, daily interface between FedEx and our drivers. Ensure drivers take direction only from Alpha Kilo leadership. Manage dispatching, schedules, and daily run assignments.
On-the-Yard Management: Meet with drivers face-to-face daily prior to dispatch. (Must be flexible to split time between day and night operations: meeting day drivers 3x/week and night drivers 2x/week).
Safety & Compliance First: Lead driver onboarding, conduct English proficiency testing, and manage FedEx badging. Act as an FMCSA/DOT Hours of Service (HOS) expert.
VEDR Coaching: Conduct mandatory, face-to-face video reviews and remedial safety training (Lytx/Safety Forward) for any camera/safety infractions (speeding, seatbelts, device use, etc.).
Hands-On Training: Personally conduct comprehensive training for all new hires and existing drivers (Drop & Hook, Motive ELD, Pre/Post-Trip inspections, Yard orientation).
Fleet Maintenance Management: Oversee scheduled PMs and unexpected repairs. Conduct weekly detailed physical tractor inspections (fluid levels, safety gear, tire tread, cab cleanliness, and seasonal winter prepping). Coordinate over-the-road breakdowns and trailer rescues.
Be the Ultimate Team Player: Step in as a backup commercial driver if a driver calls off, or to rescue a trailer in an emergency breakdown situation. Cultivate growth by proactively asking FedEx daily for extra revenue run/spot opportunities.
What We Are Looking For (Requirements)
Proven Fleet/Logistics Management: Experience managing commercial drivers, ideally within the FedEx Ground network or a similar fast-paced transportation environment.
Valid CDL Class [A] (Required): You must be willing and qualified to step into a tractor and drive/rescue a load if an operational emergency arises.
Compliance Expert: Deep knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations, Hours of Service (HOS), and Electronic Logging Devices (ELD/Motive).
Strong Communicator: High emotional intelligence to motivate drivers, combined with the professionalism needed to manage corporate relationships with FedEx terminal staff.
Tech-Savvy: Comfortable navigating safety and log software (Lytx, Safety Forward, Motive ELD, etc.) and submitting weekly digital activity summaries by strict deadlines.
Problem Solver: Ability to remain calm and decisive during over-the-road breakdowns or tight dispatch windows.
