This position is responsible law enforcement work protecting life and property in Whitman County through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work will involve an element of danger and employees of this class must exercise individual judgment in meeting emergencies with minimum supervision. Work is normally performed in association with a patrol car due to the large geographic area to be policed in Whitman County. Employees of this class will be responsible for general county-wide law enforcement activities on their assigned shifts. Work will involve considerable contact with other county departments, city and state law enforcement officers, the court system, the general public, and jail inmates; sometimes under difficult, dangerous, and stressful conditions. Employees will be expected to rotate work shifts working days, nights, and holidays. Employees will also be required to wear a uniform.
Work is normally performed in a patrol car or office setting. Duties may, at times, be physically demanding and potentially life-threatening. Qualifications may be found through the Deputy Position Description document.
Testing for entry level Deputy Sheriff is done through Public Service Testing (PST). You will be required to sign up with and test through PST at https://www.publicsafetytesting.com .

Any combination of experience, education, and training which would provide the level of knowledge and ability required. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license. In addition, applicants for the position of Entry Level Deputy Sheriff must be 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States. Person(s) appointed to positions of this class must complete 660 hours of classroom course work at the police academy and field training requirements prior to completion of the established probation period.
