To be considered for this position, one must possess current Registered Veterinary Technician certification.
Oversees the initial receiving of incoming animals and monitors the health of all animals sheltered at HSWC. Recognizes and alerts veterinary staff to potential health concerns and supervises Receiving staff. Works in cooperation with all departments to effectively utilize resources, both people, monetary and donations for the maximum benefit to the department, the HSWC and the animals in our care.
This classification is considered an HSWC Essential Position. This means that the Receiving Clinic Manager must report to work, if scheduled to work, during days that are declared HSWC Winter Weather Closure days.
*Oversees and ensures all animals entering HSWC receive basic intake health examinations upon their arrival and are provided with immediate health care based on their individual needs.
*Oversees receiving staff performing intake exams, giving vaccinations, venipunctures for blood tests, deworming, parasite diagnosis and treatment, and basic ear/wound cleaning. Fills in to perform these duties when needed.
*Monitors the flow of animals and makes adjustments based on daily needs and challenges.
*Ensures Receiving Clinic staff are trained to safely handle and restrain animals using low stress handling techniques and appropriate personal protective equipment.
*Ensures that disease transmission is minimized by maintaining high standards of cleanliness of all animals, equipment and cages in the Receiving Clinic.
*Is able to write and implement standard operating procedures and other documents as needed.
*Monitors animal records in the shelter software system. This includes entering medical records, surrender profiles, and photos, overseeing that entries are made accurately and on a timely basis by staff. Corrects errors when noted.
*Works collaboratively with Behavior and Health Coordinators to move animals from Receiving Clinic to other areas of the shelter per healthy animal flow guidelines.
*Closely monitors the shelter population and works collaboratively with management to maintain the integrity of the HSWC’s adoption program and goal of zero euthanasia of adoptable animals.
*Oversees the preparation and administration of medications for morning and evening rounds.
*Oversees the daily To Do lists for animals.
*Performs animal euthanasia and mentors staff learning euthanasia protocols and procedure as needed. Coordinates with Field Services to promptly receive incoming case animals and ensures proper care of animals during their time at the shelter.
*Works with the Behavior Coordinators and Veterinary Team to ensure health rounds are performed on a daily basis and that blood work, dental exams and other prophylactic care is provided to senior animals prior to surgery or adoption.
*Assists foster care program with monitoring health and behavioral development/modification of animals in foster care as needed.
*Promotes communication and cooperation. Provides staff to and volunteers with guidance and promotes professional development.
*Ensures that policies and procedures are being followed.
*Is flexible with scheduling and is available when away from the facility as needed to meet the needs of the organization.
*Maintains Receiving Clinic medical supply inventory
*Monitors accuracy of records and controls supplies used by the department.
*Ensures quality client services are provided to patrons, visitors, staff and volunteers.
*Assists staff in situations requiring immediate problem solving and handles escalated client situations if asked to do so by manager.
*Takes control of situations that could be potentially damaging to the professional image of the HSWC.
· Registered veterinary technician certification is required.
· Prior supervisory experience in animal shelter or veterinary clinic
· Ability to identify signs of animal illnesses, diseases and injuries, animal species, breeds, ages, and sexes.
· Ability to prepare sample, review under microscope, and interpret the results of basic veterinary diagnostic tests.
· Advanced understanding of animal behavior and stress cues
· Skilled with humane animal capture techniques and humane restraint methods
· Demonstrates flexibility and de-escalation techniques in stressful situations
· Understanding of herd health and animal management best practices
*Ability to multi-task, prioritize and oversee staff in a fast-paced environment
*Basic medical math skills to calculate medication dosages.
*Candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively
*Strong attention to detail and strong oral and written communication skills
*Availability to work daytime, evenings, weekends, and holidays
*Candidates must be committed to treating animals with kindness and respect
*Willingness to deal with conflicts, questions, and problems in a professional manner and with consideration for the good of the organization.
*Ability to follow the HSWC Standards of Conduct.
*Willingness to perform humane euthanasia and prepare bodies for rabies testing as directed (when trained)
*Cooperative work ethic and willingness to fill in for other areas and performing other tasks/functions as needed
*Models behavior for a safe work environment by following all procedures established to maintain a safe work environment including using Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE), safe animal and chemical handling, reporting all near misses and accidents
*Ability to be vaccinated with pre-exposure rabies.
*Must possess a valid Driver’s License and insurable driving record.
Work environment may have regular exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as zoonotic disease, parasites, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, pathogenic substances, animal attacks or animal bites. The noise level in the work environment can be very loud. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation. Standing on feet for 8 – 10 hours per day. Computer usage.
