Unit Coordination:
- Communication with customers, clinical staff, and ancillary staff
- Coordinate activity at nurse's station
- Answering phones, call lights, customer service with visitors and providers
- Paging staff as needed
- Emptying tube system and distributing items
- Assist charge nurse/team leader/manager as requested
Clerical Functions
- Provide clerical support to department and management
- Maintain forms required for patient care
- Operate and perform simple maintenance on office equipment
- Place work orders for equipment if needed
- Monitor supplies and order when needed
- Update reference lists, phone lists, communication tools
- Maintain supplies needed for downtime
- Maintain patient education materials and binders
- Assist with admission and discharge process
Electronic Medical Record
- Monitor and maintain paper portion of record
- "Push and Pull" patients from procedures and update patient location when off unit
- Assist with scanning of documents into EMR
- Notify physicians or physician offices of consult order and document
- Print lab labels
- Enter pharmacy of choice in EMR
- Information resource
Safety
- Assist with creating and maintaining a safe environment in the department
- Appropriately reports and takes action on identified safety concerns
- Perform department duties as required, such as keeping unit, staff areas, and refrigerators clean and neat
Quality
- Assist with data collection and data entry for unit quality measures
- Assists RN with EMR audits for documentation showing compliance with quality measures/charging and notifies nurse of deficiencies
- Participate on department and/or hospital committees and performance improvement projects as appropriate
Unit Description:
This 41 private bed unit provides care for surgical/medical patients, with an emphasis on the post-operative patient and complex medical surgical patients. The staff on Surgical Medical Care Center (SMCC) provides care to a wide variety of patients including trauma patients, post-operative patients, genito-urinary procedures, head and neck cases, bariatric surgical procedures and multiple medical conditions. SMCC is recognized for its teamwork, and dedication to quality care and patient safety. The unit also has a strong and engaged Healthy Work Environment team that celebrates staff and brings fun and positivity to the unit. SMCC has the 2nd highest PDP participation percentage in the Deaconess Health system and over half of the RN’s hold their CMSRN certification. A unit nurse was recently awarded with the Daisy award for exceptional care of a surgical patient in 2025. SMCC is sought after by Schools of Nursing for the wide variety of learning experiences, teamwork, patient population, knowledge of complex wound management, and nursing expertise.
Required: Certifications/Licenses/Education:
- Basic Life Support: Health Care Provider, within six months of hire.
- Completion of a high school education or equivalent (GED) preferred
- Successfully completes Epic class as required by care center/unit.
