FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens , LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.
Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. The Natural Sciences Department at LaGuardia Community College, part of the City University of New York, is inviting applications for part-time faculty positions. We are seeking instructors to teach college-level Chemistry courses for the Fall 2026 semester, starting on September 1, 2026.
The successful candidate(s) will be required to perform teaching and guidance duties in the area(s) of expertise. This includes teaching lectures and/or labs, creating, administering, and grading assessments (quizzes, exams, lab reports), and providing student guidance.
SCC 110 Foundation of Chemistry: This one-semester chemistry course addresses the needs primarily of allied health students. Topics include measurement and significant figures, atomic structure, elements and compounds, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, solutions, acids and bases, classification of simple organic compounds according to functional groups, and biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. The laboratory component is designed to illustrate the fundamental laws and techniques of general chemistry.
QUALIFICATIONS
For Adjunct Assistant Professor:
Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field required. The ability to teach successfully demonstrates scholarship or achievement, as well as cooperation with others for the good of the institution.
For Adjunct Lecturer:
Master's degree or enrollment in a graduate program in a relevant field preferred. The ability to teach successfully demonstrates scholarship or achievement, as well as cooperation with others for the good of the institution.
COMPENSATION
For Adjunct Lecturer: $112.50/hr
For Adjunct Assistant Professor: $120.83/hr
