DEFINITION
Under direct supervision, performs duties in the maintenance, configuration, and reliable operation of computer systems. Assists in installing, managing, and troubleshooting computer hardware, software, and network devices; performs professional and administrative work related to network systems, monitoring, and maintenance. Provides technical assistance to the IT Manager and performs related work as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from the IT Manager. Exercises no supervision of staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth.
- Performs maintenance, configuration, and ensures reliable operation of Agency computer systems.
- Participates in organization and cataloging storage areas
- Identifies resource needs; recommends and implements policies and procedures, including standard operating procedures for areas of responsibility.
- Installs and upgrades computer components and software, manages virtual servers, and integrates automation processes.
- Troubleshoots hardware and software errors by running diagnostics, documenting problems and resolutions.
- Assists with updating related Agency websites
- Installs and/or removes rack mount equipment
- Participates in the Development and implementation of IT strategy and plans.
- Perform or delegate regular backup operations and implement appropriate processes for data protection, disaster recovery, and failover procedures.
- Provides desktop and helpdesk support, ensures all desktop applications, workstations, and related equipment problems are resolved in a timely manner with limited disruptions.
- Drives and/or operates vehicles on the Airport Operations Area, maintains records and ensures regulatory and internal procedure compliance.
- Assists in maintaining accurate manual and computerized logs and records of assigned work performed including materials and equipment used; prepares reports as required.
- Responds to emergencies, during and after workhours, following Agency guidelines.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Performs other duties as assigned. The employee will receive the training, instructions, and support needed to successfully complete any additional tasks that fall within the general scope of their duties and align with the operational needs of the agency.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Applicable Federal, State, and local laws and procedures relevant to assigned area.
- Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work.
- Modern office practices, methods, and basic operational applications.
- Principles and procedures of record-keeping and reporting.
- Safe driving rules and practices.
- Military time and aviation phonetic alphabet.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Associate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, System Administration, or a closely related field, or equivalent experience. Typical experience would include no less than 1 year of database, network administration, or system administration experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
- System administration and IT certifications in related fields preferred.
Conditions of Employment
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by the time of appointment. This requirement is in accordance with California law, as the position involves operating agency vehicles as part of its essential functions.
- Successfully complete background check to obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required.
- Completion of a 10-panel drug screen for all substances deemed illegal by the Federal Government
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in the Air Operations Area (AOA) and airport facilities and surrounding premises; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied tools and airport-related equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various airport sites; vision to read printed materials, differentiate between colored lights/wiring/cables, and read computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
