Material Technician Lead – Civil Engineering Infrastructure

Position Summary:
The Material Technician Lead oversees and manages materials testing and quality assurance activities for civil engineering infrastructure projects, including transportation, soil, concrete, asphalt, and utility installations. The role ensures that construction materials meet project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements while providing technical guidance and supervision to field and laboratory staff.
Essential Functions:
- Lead daily materials testing operations for soil, concrete, asphalt, and utility pipe projects.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, ASTM, AASHTO, and state/local regulations.
- Review, validate, and approve test results, maintaining accuracy and completeness.
- Supervise and mentor junior technicians and field staff on proper testing procedures and documentation.
- Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and project managers to resolve material-related issues and non-compliance concerns.
- Maintain detailed records of testing activities, laboratory results, and quality control documentation.
- Support project QA/QC programs and ensure timely reporting for inspections, audits, and regulatory submissions.
- Implement and enforce safety protocols and laboratory best practices.
Other Functions:
- Assist in developing standard operating procedures for materials testing.
- Provide training and technical support for new staff and interns.
- Participate in project meetings to provide material quality updates and recommendations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of civil engineering materials, testing methods, and quality control procedures.
- Hands-on experience with soil, asphalt, concrete, and utility pipe testing.
- Proficiency with laboratory equipment, field testing procedures, and relevant software tools.
- Strong leadership, analytical, problem-solving, and reporting skills.
- Ability to interpret technical specifications, standards, and regulatory requirements.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in civil engineering infrastructure projects with a strong background in materials testing and quality control.
- Professional certifications in construction materials testing preferred (e.g., NICET, ACI, or state-specific credentials).
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to work on-site in field and laboratory environments.
- Adherence to all safety standards and protocols.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preference(s):
- NICET or ACI certification.
- Experience with transportation, utility, or large-scale civil infrastructure projects.
