We're looking for a skilled programmer who genuinely enjoys teaching to work with a bright rising 3rd grader who has outgrown scratch and is ready to build new things.
He's not a typical beginner. He's completed every CrunchLabs Hack Pack, is deep into robotics and engineering, and learns fast when the material is real. He needs an instructor who can take him into actual programming (Python, game development, simple hardware projects) and who is fluent in how software gets built now: AI-assisted coding, modern tools, and the judgment to know when to use them and when to make him think it through himself.
This is a teaching role for a real builder. The ideal candidate writes code regularly (professionally, in school, or on serious personal projects), uses AI coding tools daily, and can translate that world for a bright 8-year-old without dumbing it down or letting the AI do his thinking for him.
What you'll do
- Design and teach a project-based progression beyond Scratch: Python fundamentals, games, creative tools, and hardware projects (micro:bit, Arduino-adjacent) that connect to his robotics interests
- Teach modern AI-assisted development honestly: how to use AI tools as a collaborator and debugger while building real understanding underneath
- Ship things: every few weeks should end with a working project he's proud to demo
- Communicate with parents on progress and what's next
What we're looking for
- Real programming ability: you write code, not just teach it (industry experience, CS coursework, or a portfolio of projects)
- Fluency with current AI coding tools and the modern development workflow
- Experience teaching or mentoring kids, and genuine patience and enthusiasm for working with a young learner
- Ability to structure sessions with clear goals rather than open-ended tinkering
- Excellent recent references we can check
- Availability during our afterschool window, 4:00–7:00 PM
Details
- 1-2 sessions per week, 60–90 minutes each, scheduled within 4:00–7:00 PM
- $75–$125/hour based on experience
- Long-term role for the right person
