The Survey and Lands Engineering (SLE) Division measures and provides geospatial information necessary for the development of design, construction, and maintenance of the New Mexico state transportation system. SLE supports all surveying and mapping activities required to fulfill the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT)'s obligation to transportation projects in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to assist in providing leadership to Survey Units to fulfill the NMDOT's obligation to survey transportation projects to meet operational needs and support the development of construction plans in support of the annual construction program (State Transportation Improvement Plan). The Professional Surveyor I devotes a substantial portion of time assisting in assigning and leading work of full time employees.
How does it get done?
The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
- Coordinates survey efforts for projects from field to finish with responsibilities for providing right of way and mapping support services for the STIP.
- Provides technical expertise and guidance support to areas and offices within the agency on matter relating to surveying and mapping inquires and needs.
- Meets with the Department staff to ensure all surveys are clear and developed within the scope of the projects.
- Assists in leading assigned survey request by coordinating, scheduling, and tracking progress of projects.

Minimum Qualification
Licensed Professional Surveyor in the State of New Mexico with four (4) years of relevant surveying experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Requires statewide overnight travel, exposure to construction equipment, traffic, heights, heavy lifting, insects, pollen, rough terrain and inclement weather conditions.
