Position Overview
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Managed Care is seeking a Medical Director to lead clinical operations at the Middleton Unit in Abilene, Texas, a large TDCJ intake facility. This role combines hands-on patient care with medical leadership in a fast-paced correctional health environment.
The Middleton Unit primarily serves as an intake and transfer facility, with a high volume of intake physicals, chronic disease management, and sick call visits. Because this is a unit of assignment, there is limited continuity of care, making strong clinical judgment, efficiency, and collaboration essential.
This position works under the general direction of the Regional Medical Director and offers significant autonomy and leadership responsibility.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Care & Medical Oversight
- Provide advanced professional medical services related to the diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients
- Perform intake physicals, chronic care management, and sick call evaluations
- Order medications per established formulary, labs, and imaging studies
- Complete medical documentation, charts, death summaries, and grievance reviews
Leadership & Supervision
- Coordinate the delivery of clinical health care services within the correctional institution
- Ensure timely access to appropriate medical care for inmates regardless of custody or segregation status
- Supervise Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners (APPs)
Collaboration & Resource Management
- Work closely with Utilization Management on specialty referrals and resource utilization
- Collaborate with Clinical Pharmacists for medication consultation
- Coordinate care with contractors, specialists, TTUHSC leadership, and TDCJ staff
Additional Duties
- Participate in compensated on-call rotation (approximately one week every 15 weeks, phone support only)
- Maintain adherence to TTUHSC’s values-based culture
- Work in a correctional environment with direct inmate contact and frequent deadlines, interruptions, and meetings
Work Environment
- Practice setting: Correctional health care
- Patient population: Adult inmates undergoing intake, short-term assignment, and chronic care
- Schedule: Primarily weekday clinical hours with limited compensated call
- Environment requires professionalism, adaptability, and strong teamwork
