Job Summary/Description:
This isn't just about filling time slots; it's about owning the evening narrative across every screen—from the TV in the living room to the phone in a viewer's hand. If you're a strategic thinker who can pivot on a dime when news breaks and still keep your team focused on the big picture, you're exactly who we need at WMTV.
As the evening executive producer you aren't just a manager, you're a mentor helping the next generation of journalists find their voice. We strive to innovate at WMTV. We don't just do things “the way they've always been done.” We are evolving and you’ll be at the forefront of that change. You'll also work in one of the best cities in the country, with a team that loves where they live. Ready to lead the evening and make your mark in Madison? Let's talk.
What You'll Do:
- Lead the evening charge. Oversee the strategic execution and presentation of our 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10 PM newscasts, ensuring every show is punchy, relevant, and urgent.
- Coach your team. Work one-on-one with producers to help them grow their shows, sharpen their presentation, and find the "wow" factor in every rundown.
- Own the editorial call. Make the tough decisions on story placement, reporter script approval, and breaking news coverage with confidence and clarity.
- Reroute and respond. Act as the air traffic controller for our reporters, moving them quickly to where the action is as news develops.
- Execute major initiatives. Partner with the News Director to bring station staples to life—from high-stakes Election coverage to our station initiatives in the community.
- Drive the digital mindset. Ensure our content doesn't just live on air, but sparks engagement across all digital and social platforms.
- Champion community impact. Lead the charge on our news coverage for our station food and diaper drive, helping us make a real difference in the Madison community.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- 3-5 years of producing experience (you've been in the trenches and know how to build a great show).
- A degree in Journalism or a related field and a rock-solid understanding of editorial judgment.
- Excellent Communicator. You can talk to anyone—from a green reporter to a veteran anchor, and get everyone on the same page quickly.
- Multi-tasking Mastery. You can approve a script, monitor a scanner, and give a producer feedback all at the same time (and make it look easy).
- Digital-First Brain. You don't see "digital" as an extra task; you see it as the primary way we connect with our audience throughout the night.
- Urgency and Empathy. You know how to move fast when news breaks, but you never lose sight of the people behind the stories and the people in the newsroom.
- Strategic Vision. You're already thinking about how to win the November Election coverage while everyone else is just focused on tonight's 6 PM.
- Familiarity with ENPS, Arc, Edius, Syncbak and Chartbeat are a plus, but not required
