Why This Role:
Synfini is rebuilding how small-molecule drugs get discovered, pairing AI-driven molecular design with real, physical chemistry automation to compress years of medicinal chemistry into weeks. As a Chemistry Automation Research Associate, you'll run the synthesis and purification workflows that turn computationally designed molecules into actual compounds on the bench, using the SynBuild automated platform that few chemists get hands-on access to this early in their career.
Company Overview:
Synfini is an agile discovery company pioneering the transformation of small molecule drug discovery through the integration of AI-driven molecular design and advanced chemistry automation technology. Headquartered in Menlo Park, California, Synfini unites virtual and physical chemistry with a powerful, chemist-first AI platform and discovery-focused robotic automation, dramatically reducing the time and cost required to translate targets and virtual drug concepts into validated candidates.
What You'll Do:
Chemistry & Synthesis
- Design and execute organic synthesis reactions on automated platforms, working from protocols developed by internal scientists and external partners
- Purify reaction products via automated flash chromatography and HPLC
- Troubleshoot failed or underperforming reactions alongside chemistry and engineering teams, and help refine automation workflows based on what you learn
- Accurately weigh, measure, and prepare chemical solutions for automated workflows
- Maintain detailed, reproducible experimental records and sample tracking
Lab Operations
- Operate and maintain automated synthesis platforms according to established SOPs
- Support inventory management, waste management, equipment calibration, and general lab upkeep
- Ensure all work complies with lab safety protocols and standards
Who You Are:
- B.S. (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, or a related field
- Hands-on organic synthesis experience — academic research, thesis work, an REU, or industry lab experience all count. Recent graduates with strong bench experience are encouraged to apply; formal industry experience is not required.
- Comfortable with core lab techniques: solution prep, weighing, purification
- Some exposure to flash chromatography and/or HPLC (academic or industry)
- Able to follow detailed, precise experimental protocols with consistency
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Effective communicator, comfortable working closely with chemistry and engineering colleagues
- Able to work on-site in Menlo Park, Monday–Friday
Nice to have (not required):
- Exposure to lab automation, robotics, or scripting/programming
- Familiarity with LIMS or electronic lab notebooks (ELN)
