Job Summary:
Responsible for assisting the Garden and Grounds Manager, Greenhouse Manager and Lead Horticulturist in managing horticultural activities at the Chevy Chase Club.
Job Duties and Responsibilities*:

Assists the Garden and Grounds Manager, Lead Horticulturist and the Greenhouse Manager in managing horticultural activities of the grounds and greenhouse departments.

Responsible for the planning, installation, and maintenance of specific gardens. Assists the Garden and Grounds Manager and Lead Horticulturist with the planning, installation and maintenance of all other gardens. Maintenance may include scouting, IPM, spraying for pests and/or diseases, deadheading, weeding, pruning, staking, watering, and other duties as required.

Keeps current with horticultural standards and practices through active participation in professional organizations and conferences.

Assists other departments in preparation of events held at the Club (i.e. indoor/outdoor parties, club functions, sport competitions, Christmas decorations, etc).

Maintains Maryland State Pesticide Applicators license and ensures compliance with state regulations.

All above duties and responsibilities should be carried out according to established Club policies/procedures.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements:

B.S. or Associates Degree in horticulture is preferred, but not mandatory.

Knowledge of garden design, plant identification, insect identification, plant pathology, soil structures, and IPM strategies.

Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and practices of horticulture, including all applicable laws and regulations.

Ability to utilize knowledge to design, install, and maintain annual, perennial, and tropical plant display beds.

Ability to work independently and in large groups.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work outdoors year-round.

Knowledge or ability to learn various types of equipment used in landscape maintenance, landscape installation and snow removal.
- Must have or be able to acquire a Maryland State certified pesticide applicators license.
- Must be willing and able to learn new tasks on regular basis.

Must be able to work with others.
- Ability to work outdoors year round (no adverse reactions to heat, cold, pollen, dust, etc).

Ability to lift over 50 pounds.

Position requires working varied hours, including weekends and holidays. Position also may require working extended hours without prior notice.
- Able to work certain holidays, weekends, and evenings (with proper notice).

The horticulturist is part of the critical snow removal team so snow removal is required. Extended hours or an early start time may be required.

Able to perform other duties as necessary.
