Public Transportation Grants Technical Writer

$60.00 - $85.00 per Hour (Depending on Experience)
Position Summary:
Acumen is seeking a specialist focused on securing and managing project funding for local transportation agencies. This role is not a general marketing position; it requires a technical writer who can collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), including Agency personnel and Consultant Project Managers, to translate complex engineering concepts into successful grant applications, technical reports, and public-facing publications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Grant Writing & Strategy: Lead the research and preparation of grant applications for local, state, and federal transportation funding.
- Technical Collaboration: Work closely with engineers and planners to extract technical data for project funding requests.
- Board & Public Relations: Prepare professional board meeting presentations, briefing documents, and all official publications intended for the public.
- Meeting Support: Attend agency meetings to record detailed meeting minutes, summaries, and action items.
- Document Control: Maintain a rigorous library of technical reports, pursuit databases, and project sheets.
Required Qualifications:
- Specific Experience: Minimum 5 years of technical writing experience specifically within transportation, infrastructure, or public agency consulting.
- Technical Literacy: Ability to work with SMEs to gather technical information for grant services.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Engineering, Planning, Public Administration, or Communications).
- Schedule: Available to work in the Oakland office Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Required Software Skills: The successful candidate must be a power user across the entire digital workflow, with a specific focus on high-stakes technical documentation and board-level presentations:
- Word: Advanced formatting for long-form technical reports and grant applications.
- PowerPoint: High-level deck creation for Board of Directors and public agency briefings.
- Excel: Data management for project pursuit databases and grant funding tracking.
- Outlook & Teams: Seamless communication and coordination with internal project managers and external agency personnel.
- SharePoint & OneDrive: Advanced document management and version control for multi-disciplinary projects.
- Adobe InDesign: This is essential for the publication of professional, agency-standard documents and reports.
- Adobe Acrobat Pro: For complex document compilation, digital signatures, and grant submission preparation
