Job Summary:
Prepare cytology slides from Gynecologic and Non Gynecologic Specimens for Microscopic examination and diagnosis by Cytopathologists and Pathologists. Preform pre-analytical procedures including labeling, preparing aliquots, specimen processing, laboratory ,Waste disposal and decontamination of laboratory areas.
Essential Key Responsibilities:
- Gynecologic, Non Gynecologic, and Molecular specimens for microscopic evaluation by opening, verifying patient identity and sample integrity, labeling and preparation of the manifest.
- Processing cytology specimens including Liquid Based Pap tests, fme needle aspirations, non-gynecologic smears and 1nonolayers.
- Pre-Aliquots and/or Aliquots specimens according to established procedures.
- Grosses and prepares smears, .111onolayer cytospins and cell blocks.
- Follows established protocols to avoid cross contamination during specin1en handling.
- Maintains the quality control of the stains, reagents, and instruments for the laboratory.
- Stains, cover slip, collates and distributes all cases.
- Distributes cases to Cytotechnologist and/or Pathologist.
- Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance on all slides processed based on established procedures.
- Processes reference test send outs and verifies correctness of order and results.
- Ensures that all inventories are complete arid appropriate supplies are ordered.
- Completes all quality control, safety, and preventative maintenance Logs on a daily basis.
- Disposes and labels biohazard and chemical waste appropriately.
- Maintains specimen identification and integrity throughout all processes of the department.
- Performs daily and weekly maintenance and/or log sheets on equipment in laboratory to include changing the stainer, basic cleaning of equipment, and recording, monitoring, and calibrating temperatures.
- Troubleshoots equipment failures.
- Answers phones and responds appropriately to client, laboratory staff and Pathologist.
- Files slides, logs, and reports
- Disinfects Laboratory work benches and work surfaces.
- Alerts appropriate laboratory personnel regarding delayed results.
- Maintains strictest confidentiality.
- Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
- Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
Education/Licensure/Certification: H.S. Diploma
Experience: Minimum one year lab experience preferred
Requirements: Process up to 500 slides acc11rately in an 8 hour shift.
- Accurate and complete QC and QA documentation.
Equipment: Computers, computer programs, information system(s), scanners, centrifuges, microscopes, distilled water units, laboratory refrigerators/freezers, analyzers, pap slide imager, liquid base pap smear, autoclaves/sterilizers, and protective personal equipment.
Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities:
- Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing, quality assurance and quality control.
- Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, equipment, and testing to monitor control checks.
- Knowledge of medical terminology desired Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Pay: $28.00 - $40.00 per hour
