NATURE OF POSITION
Instruct swim lessons in accordance with Starfish Aquatics Institute curriculum; Instruct Sea Monkeys swim team.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
General direction and oversight is provided by the Aquatic Recreation Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Comply with the City of Walla Walla's work safety standards and procedures.

Prepare and set-up equipment prior to the start of each shift.

Wear a uniform (swimsuit and instructor t-shirt).

Complete certification in the Starfish Aquatics Institute curriculum and adhere to the training program standards on instruction.

Attend all mandatory trainings; assist in completion of accurate reports of accidents, corrections, and first-aid treatments.

Develop and implement lesson plans for all assigned classes; instruct swimming lessons and swim team from scheduled plans.

Provide appropriate correction and technique to class participants.

Complete paperwork for swim program in a timely and efficient manner, including but not limited to student progress reports and skills checklists.

Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public and provide information as appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Safety practices used in and around the operation and maintenance of public swimming pools.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Ability to respond appropriately to an emergency situation.

Knowledge of basic swimming strokes (freestyle and backstroke).
-
Interest and experience in working with kids in a caring and patient manner.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Flippers, kickboards, life vests and other aquatic devices to support learning and recreation in a municipal pool environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sitting and standing for extended periods of time; seeing, hearing, and speaking to exchange information; repetitive hand movements; intermittently stand, walk, kneel, stoop, bend at the waist and lift up to 40 pounds; swim, dive and demonstrate other swimming skills as necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Outdoor environment, in and around swimming pools and aquatics facilities; exposure to pool chemicals; extended exposure to sunlight; heat; water and wet surfaces. Work is performed in all types of weather conditions and around children, noise, and distractions.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be 15 years of age.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of all swimming strokes (freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke); Proficient swimming ability; Competitive swimming experience; Bilingual in Spanish.
