Job Overview
The Congregation of Divine Providence is seeking a dependable and experienced Full-Time Cook to prepare nutritious, flavorful, home-style meals for the Sisters who live in our community.
This position offers the unique opportunity to serve the Sisters in their home while working on a peaceful and beautiful campus. Rather than a traditional restaurant environment, our Food Service team helps create a warm and welcoming dining experience where meals are an important part of the Sisters’ daily life.
The Full-Time Cook will prepare a variety of meals from scratch using approved recipes, quality ingredients, and traditional cooking methods. Responsibilities include preparing meats, vegetables, soups, casseroles, salads, side dishes, breads, desserts, and special holiday or event meals. The Cook should take pride in the taste, appearance, texture, and overall quality of each meal.
The ideal candidate enjoys preparing homemade food, works well as part of a team, and understands the importance of creating meals with care and consistency. This role requires dependability, organization, safe food-handling practices, and a respectful presence that reflects our values of simplicity, charity, dignity, and respect.
Essential Responsibilities
- Prepare homemade and from-scratch meals according to approved menus, recipes, and supervisor instructions.
- Use fresh, frozen, and pantry ingredients to prepare meats, vegetables, soups, casseroles, salads, side dishes, sauces, breads, desserts, and special meal items.
- Measure, mix, season, chop, slice, bake, roast, grill, sauté, and otherwise prepare food using appropriate cooking methods.
- Follow recipes carefully while using sound cooking judgment to ensure meals have the proper taste, appearance, texture, temperature, and consistency.
- Prepare traditional, comforting meals that are appropriate for the Sisters and their home environment.
- Complete advance preparation, including washing and cutting produce, preparing ingredients, thawing food safely, and organizing items needed for upcoming meals.
- Review menus and recipes to determine the ingredients, preparation steps, quantities, and cooking times required.
- Prepare meals in the appropriate quantities while maintaining consistent quality and portion sizes.
- Assist with special meals, holiday menus, celebrations, and community events.
- Accommodate approved dietary modifications and special meal instructions as directed by the Food Service Supervisor.
- Set up and serve meals in designated dining areas while helping maintain a welcoming and respectful atmosphere.
- Properly store, label, date, rotate, and handle food to maintain quality and reduce waste.
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, safe, and organized kitchen.
- Assist with dishwashing, pot washing, kitchen cleanup, and other food service duties as operational needs require.
- Work cooperatively with cooks, food service aides, dishwashers, supervisors, and other staff members.
- Treat the Sisters, visitors, coworkers, and staff with dignity, patience, kindness, and respect.
Preferred Experience
Previous experience preparing homemade or from-scratch meals in a restaurant, residential dining setting, senior living community, convent, retreat center, healthcare environment, school, cafeteria, catering operation, or similar food service setting is preferred.
Candidates should be comfortable following written recipes, preparing meals in larger quantities, using commercial kitchen equipment, and adjusting their preparation schedule to ensure meals are ready and served on time.
