Richard E. Pierson Construction Company is seeking an experienced General Superintendent to oversee and lead our New Jersey field operations. This is a critical leadership position responsible for directing multiple heavy highway and civil construction projects while providing guidance, mentorship, and accountability to Superintendents, Foremen, and field personnel.
We are looking for a proven construction leader with a minimum of 15-20 years of heavy highway and heavy civil experience who understands what it takes to successfully deliver complex infrastructure projects throughout New Jersey. The ideal candidate has extensive experience working on NJDOT, New Jersey Turnpike Authority, and Garden State Parkway projects and has successfully managed crews performing earthwork, underground utilities, concrete, structures, and roadway construction.
Qualified candidates must also have experience working with Legal Trade Unions and understand their work rules, labor obligations, and CBAs, ensuring full compliance while fostering positive relationships with trade unions and the workforce.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and oversight for multiple heavy highway and heavy civil construction projects throughout New Jersey.
- Supervise, mentor, and support Superintendents, Foremen, and field personnel across multiple job sites.
- Ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, subcontractors, and material resources between projects.
- Work closely with Project Managers and executive leadership to develop project schedules and construction strategies.
- Attend cost review meetings to ensure field operations align with project budgets, schedules, and financial goals.
- Monitor project progress and proactively identify and resolve field issues.
- Ensure compliance with all NJDOT, NJ Turnpike Authority, Garden State Parkway, OSHA, and owner specifications.
- Review project plans, specifications, shop drawings, and contract documents to ensure proper execution.
- Conduct regular job-site visits to monitor productivity, quality control, and safety performance.
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), union work rules, and labor obligations.
- Lead project planning meetings and coordinate activities with project teams.
- Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with owners, inspectors, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Mentor and develop the next generation of field leadership within the company.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 15-20 years of heavy highway and heavy civil construction experience required.
- Extensive experience managing large-scale infrastructure projects in New Jersey.
- Previous experience serving as a General Superintendent, Senior Superintendent, Area Superintendent, or equivalent leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple active projects simultaneously.
- Strong background in:
- Heavy earthwork
- Underground utilities and pipe installation
- Concrete construction
- Bridge and structural work
- Highway and roadway construction
- Significant experience working on projects for:
- NJDOT
- New Jersey Turnpike Authority
- Garden State Parkway
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong knowledge of construction means, methods, sequencing, and scheduling.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to motivate and manage large field teams.
Preferred Skills
- Experience using HCSS HeavyJob construction management software.
- Familiarity with scheduling software and daily production tracking.
- OSHA 30 Certification (or ability to obtain).
- Strong understanding of cost control, production tracking, and project planning.
- Experience working on projects exceeding $20M in value is preferred.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $175,000-$225,000 annually (based on experience)
