SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, the Mechanic/Fleet Maintenance Technician performs skilled diagnostic, maintenance, and repair work on City-owned vehicles, equipment, and machinery. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, repairing gas and diesel engines, maintaining service records, ordering and tracking parts, and ensuring municipal fleet equipment remains safe, reliable, and operational. The position also assists with maintaining shop cleanliness and safety standards while supporting multiple City departments through timely repairs and coordination of maintenance activities.
RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
1. Perform preventive maintenance on City vehicles and equipment, including oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, filter replacements, and scheduled inspections.
2. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and drivetrain systems on a variety of municipal vehicles and equipment.
3. Perform repairs and replacement of engines, brakes, steering systems, suspension components, transmissions, and related equipment.
4. Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, wiring harnesses, lighting systems, charging systems, and computer modules using diagnostic equipment and software.
5. Perform maintenance and basic repairs on small engines and equipment including lawnmowers, chainsaws, weed eaters, generators, and similar equipment.
6. Service and maintain a wide range of City fleet equipment including police vehicles, ambulances, sanitation trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, street equipment, mowers, and light-duty vehicles.
7. Perform repairs on both gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
8. Conduct safety inspections to ensure vehicles and equipment comply with applicable DOT, OSHA, state, and local regulations.
9. Maintain accurate maintenance logs, repair histories, inspection reports, and work orders utilizing fleet management software and related systems.
10. Order, track, and maintain inventory of repair parts, tools, fluids, and shop supplies.
11. Work with vendors and suppliers to obtain parts and services in a cost-effective and timely manner.
12. Properly handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials such as oils, coolants, batteries, solvents, and other automotive fluids in accordance with environmental regulations.
13. Assist with identifying recurring mechanical issues and report equipment nearing end-of-life or replacement needs to supervisors.
14. Coordinate with department supervisors and equipment operators to prioritize repairs and minimize equipment downtime.
15. Communicate repair status, estimated completion times, and operational concerns to supervisors and fleet users.
16. Coordinate and schedule outsourced repairs or specialized maintenance services when necessary.
17. Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of the maintenance shop and work areas.
18. Assist in training less experienced mechanics, apprentices, or assigned personnel as needed.
19. Respond to emergency repair needs or after-hours service calls when required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Principles and practices of automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
Gasoline and diesel engine systems.
Hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
Diagnostic tools, software, and repair equipment.
Occupational hazards and safety precautions related to mechanical repair work.
Proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
Education and License Requirements:
Valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record required.
High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
Vocational or technical training in automotive or diesel mechanics is preferred.
ASE certifications are preferred but not required.
Texas Class “B” CDL License, or ability to obtain within a specified period of employment, is strongly desired.
Ability to work legally in the United States.

Physical: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Frequently required to lift and/or move, push and/or pull up to 50 pounds.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
