Job Overview
The Assistant Project Manager (APM) supports Senior Project Managers in the successful execution of structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects from contract award through project closeout. The APM is responsible for managing project documentation, coordinating submittals and RFIs, maintaining project records, assisting with change order administration, and serving as a communication link between customers, detailers, fabrication, field operations, and project management.
This position is intended to develop future Project Managers by providing hands-on experience in project coordination, contract administration, and construction operations.
Responsibilities
Project Documentation & Administration
- Maintain project files and documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Prepare and process submittals, shop drawing packages, product data, and closeout documents.
- Track submittal status and ensure timely responses from customers and design teams.
- Maintain project correspondence logs and document control systems.
- Assist with preparation and distribution of meeting minutes.
RFI Management
- Prepare, submit, and track Requests for Information (RFIs).
- Coordinate responses with project managers, detailers, engineers, and customers.
- Maintain accurate RFI logs and follow up on outstanding items.
- Escalate unresolved issues to the Senior Project Manager.
Project Coordination
- Coordinate with detailing teams regarding drawing status and revisions.
- Assist fabrication and erection teams by communicating project requirements and schedule updates.
- Monitor project schedules and help identify potential impacts or delays.
- Support project turnover meetings and internal coordination efforts.
Change Order & Extra Work Administration
- Assist in documenting scope changes and extra work requests.
- Track potential change orders and maintain change order logs.
- Gather supporting documentation for pricing and contract administration.
- Assist Senior Project Managers with preparation of change order proposals.
Customer & Vendor Communication
- Maintain professional communication with general contractors, owners, architects, engineers, suppliers, and subcontractors.
- Respond promptly to project-related inquiries.
- Help ensure customer expectations and project requirements are clearly communicated internally.
Project Financial Support
- Assist with project cost tracking and reporting.
- Support collection of project information required for billing.
- Help maintain accurate records of project progress and contract modifications.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field preferred.
- Equivalent construction industry experience may be considered.
Experience
- 1–3 years of construction industry experience preferred.
- Experience with structural steel, miscellaneous metals, fabrication, or commercial construction is highly desirable.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word).
- Experience with project management software is a plus.
- Detail-oriented with strong follow-through.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
