Position Summary
The Medication Technician is responsible for assisting residents with their medications and providing resident care within the scope of training, authorization, and applicable California RCFE regulations. The Med Tech is expected to follow facility policies, medication procedures, physician orders, and direction from licensed nursing personnel.
The Med Tech must demonstrate professionalism, accuracy, compassion, confidentiality, and accountability while supporting residents' health, safety, dignity, and independence.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesMedication Management
- Assist residents with self-administration of medications as permitted by California RCFE regulations and facility policy.
- Follow physician's orders and the resident's medication instructions accurately.
- Verify the right resident, medication, dose, time, route, and documentation according to facility procedures.
- Properly document medication assistance/administration in the MAR/TAR or applicable electronic system.
- Maintain medication records accurately and promptly.
- Identify and report medication errors, omissions, refusals, adverse reactions, or other concerns immediately to the appropriate supervisor or licensed nurse.
- Properly store, secure, and handle medications.
- Follow procedures for controlled medications and medication counts, where applicable.
- Follow procedures for medication refills, deliveries, returns, discontinued medications, and disposal.
- Never alter, discontinue, substitute, or independently change a medication or physician's order.
Resident Care
- Assist residents with activities of daily living within the scope of the position and facility policy.
- Monitor residents and report changes in condition, behavior, appetite, mobility, or general well-being.
- Provide respectful and compassionate assistance while maintaining resident dignity and privacy.
- Encourage residents' independence whenever safely possible.
- Follow resident care plans and communicate relevant observations to the appropriate care team.
Communication and Documentation
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation.
- Communicate important resident information during shift report.
- Report changes in resident condition promptly.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident information.
- Communicate professionally with residents, families, coworkers, physicians, pharmacies, and healthcare professionals.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all applicable California RCFE requirements, facility policies, emergency procedures, infection-control practices, and safety procedures.
- Participate in required training and competency evaluations.
- Maintain required certifications and training.
- Report accidents, injuries, medication errors, suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, or other safety concerns immediately through the appropriate reporting channels.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and secure medication area.
- Do not allow unauthorized individuals access to medications or confidential resident information.
Med Room Expectations
All Med Techs are expected to understand what happens in the medication room, including:
- Medication storage and organization.
- Medication delivery and receipt.
- MAR/TAR documentation.
- Medication refills.
- Medication discrepancies.
- Medication disposal and returns.
- Controlled medication procedures.
- Medication errors and reporting.
- Communication with the pharmacy and licensed nurse.
- Maintaining security and confidentiality.
Med Techs must ask questions when they are uncertain rather than guessing or proceeding outside their training or authority.
Professional Conduct
The Med Tech is expected to:
- Treat every resident with dignity and respect.
- Maintain a professional attitude.
- Work cooperatively with caregivers, LVNs, management, families, and other team members.
- Avoid arguing or discussing resident matters in public areas.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with residents.
- Protect resident confidentiality.
- Report concerns through the appropriate chain of command.
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and accountability.
Qualifications
- Must meet applicable California RCFE medication-training requirements.
- Current required certifications and training must be maintained.
- Previous RCFE, assisted living, healthcare, or caregiving experience preferred.
- Ability to read and follow medication orders and facility procedures.
- Ability to accurately document medication-related information.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing, as required for the position.
Physical Requirements
The employee may be required to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Assist residents with mobility and daily activities.
- Bend, reach, and lift within facility-established limits.
- Respond promptly to resident needs and emergencies.
Pay: $22.50 - $23.50 per hour
