Position Summary
The YMCA of Parkersburg is looking for dependable and energetic After-School Mentors to join our team. Mentors provide a safe, positive, and engaging environment for children in our After-School and Out-of-School Care programs.
This position is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with children and wants to make a meaningful impact in their day. Responsibilities include supervising children, helping with homework, leading games and enrichment activities, and building positive relationships with participants.
After-school locations are throughout Wood County, so the work location may vary. Hours are generally between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, depending on program enrollment and site needs.
What You'll Do
- Provide safe, attentive care and supervision for school-age children.
- Lead games, recreational activities, and enrichment opportunities.
- Assist children with homework and other school-related activities.
- Create a welcoming environment where children feel supported and included.
- Implement planned activities that meet the interests, abilities, and individual needs of children.
- Encourage positive behavior and incorporate YMCA values and character development.
- Build positive relationships with children, families, staff, and community partners.
- Communicate professionally with parents and respond to questions or concerns.
- Maintain accurate program records and complete required documentation.
- Participate in staff meetings and required training.
- Follow all YMCA policies and applicable state childcare licensing regulations.
- Support the YMCA's commitment to child safety and abuse prevention.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of one year of relevant experience working with children preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable, responsible, and able to create a positive environment for children.
- Previous childcare, education, recreation, or youth-program experience is a plus.
Required Certifications & Clearances
Employees must complete or maintain the following as required:
- Praesidium Child Abuse Prevention and Reporting Awareness
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
- Food Handler certification
- Tuberculosis clearance prior to employment
- WV CARES and WV-DHHR background and criminal record checks
The YMCA will provide guidance regarding required training and certifications.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position takes place in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings. Mentors must be able to actively supervise children, participate in activities, move throughout the program space, and respond to the needs of participants.
The position may require sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
