Nature and Scope of Job: The role of Student Support Officer (SSO) is responsible for supporting the success of students through distinctive behavioral management and strong academic support. In addition this position will also serve as the School Officer (Armed) will play a big role in keeping the school community safe and acting as a deterrent to harmful or unsafe activity by remaining visible at Philip’s Academy Charter School (Hill St).The Student Support Officer inspires teachers to excel in their jobs and motivates students to achieve their highest potential. They will build solid relationships and foster positive school culture that aligns with the core mission and values of Philip’s Academy Charter School.
The Student Support Officer is responsible for helping to shape and sustain the school’s distinctive culture and ensuring that students internalize the school’s values and aspirations for academic excellence.To build a culture that is focused on student enrichment by leaning into the Leader In Me models and continually building community partnerships.
Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Student Support:
Individuals who thrive at PACS tend to be entrepreneurial professionals and hungry learners who crave frequent high-quality feedback on their practice. The SSA is responsible for supporting the school’s core behavior, culture and character education programs, and will perform a variety of essential responsibilities, including (but not limited to):
- Proactively plan and execute systems to drive positive student behavior and create an academics-focused culture of achievement.
- Proactively step into classes to drive culture by reinforcing and celebrating excellence, having a quick private conversation with a student who may be struggling, and/or making a quick observation/suggestion to a teacher.
- Immediately respond to teacher calls for behavior support, ideally keeping small disturbances small.
- Simultaneously support the teacher and his/her authority/school expectations, while supporting the scholar to be successful by identifying and addressing the root cause of the behavior.
- Communicate with and collaborate with parents/families/guardians to share updates behavioral or academic concerns/updates and to enlist their partnership in problem solving.
- Support school staff and administration in the development of effective techniques to maximize student learning through a positive culture.
- Accurately input and act on culture data to support scholars; reflect on and act on data quickly to address possible trends.
- Ensure that culture data for your cohort is logged and accurate, especially data that may be helpful in supporting struggling scholars such as student disciplinary records and subsequent data-driven interventions implemented in conjunction with the student services team.
- As part of our restorative process, guide students to reflect, take ownership, build skill, and advocate for their needs/share their perspective. apologies/amends are made.
- Drive student attendance to exceed school goals through a variety of investment strategies, incentive structures and events as well as interventions to support scholars who are struggling to attend or arrive on time.
- Actively monitor all out of class times such as lunch, transitions, hallway traffic during class, arrival and dismissal etc.
- Serve as a liaison to parents - proactively communicate positive progress of students to build rapport and connection and celebrate students. Support teachers to do the same.
- Assist in the development and execution of student supports and interventions along with the student support team.
School Officer(Armed):
- Assist in the development and execution of student supports and interventions along with the student support team.
- Must be able to meet and continue to meet any applicable state/city licensing requirements for Security Officers in NEW JERSEY.
- Ensures the facility is provided with high-quality security services to protect people and property.
- Maintains Arrival and Dismissal protocols to ensure all students are accounted for during Drop-off and Pick- up.
- Ability to write routine correspondence, including logs and reports plus good organizational skills. Also, can carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
- Ability to maintain professional composure when dealing with unusual circumstances.
- Maintain courteous telephone or radio manners.
- Answers questions and assists guests and employees.
- Patrols the facility on foot- frequent standing and walking may be required for long periods of time and may involve climbing stairs and walking up inclines.
- Reports safety concerns, security breaches, and unusual circumstances both verbally and in writing.
- Handles security issues or emergency situations appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Maintains proficiency in the use of all assigned protective equipment, restraint devices, and weapons.
Qualifications:
- Associate Degree in Education or related field preferred; advanced degree in education a plus.
- At least three (3) years of successful work in the Student Support or Dean field in an urban school environment
- A clear record of elevating student achievement in an urban classroom, with a strong understanding of pedagogy that drives results.
- Have superb organizational and self-management skills and be able to handle multiple responsibilities effectively; have strong planning and execution skills; be a goal-oriented and effective problem-solver.
- A relentless work ethic and commitment to achieving the school's mission.
- Excellent strategic planning, leadership, management, and communication skills, with a proven ability to lead instructional and non-instructional staff.
- Shared dedication to Philip’s Academy’s philosophy and mission.
- Communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally. Bilingual a plus.
- Possess excellent integrity, a gentle spirit, and demonstrate strong moral character and initiative.
- Demonstrate technological abilities: word processing, data management, and informational retrieval.
- Submit a background check through the New Jersey Department of Education.
- Be CPR, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogen certified or obtain certification upon hire.
- Complete a Tuberculosis test
- Be able to kneel, bend, squat, lift, push, pull, and carry students up to 70lbs.
- Have dependable transportation.
- Must have an active SORA CARD!!
- Must have an active NJ PERMIT TO CARRY!
- Prior Law Enforcement or Correctional Officers experience a plus.
- Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player.
- Experience working with and in urban schools is highly preferred.
- Possess excellent integrity and demonstrates strong moral character and initiative.
- Submit background check through NJDOE.
