Charter Schools:
The New Mexico Public Education Department's Charter Schools Division (CSD) is driving student success in New Mexico by supporting excellent authorizing practices and charter schools that provide innovative, quality education.
Please note that all charter schools in New Mexico are public schools. Public charter schools can be state-chartered or district-chartered. All state-chartered schools in New Mexico are authorized by the Public Education Commission (PEC) and serve as their own Local Educational Agency (LEA).
Several public school districts also serve as charter school authorizers and those locally-chartered public schools operate under the jurisdiction of the local school district.
Why does the job exist?
This position for the PED Charter Schools Division (CSD) is required to provide oversight of state charter school performance in order to evaluate charter schools in reporting to the Public Education Commission (PEC), the authorizer of state charter schools. This position will implement the responsibilities of the Charter Schools Act, including participating in the implementation and ongoing improvement of the division's charter authorization procedures, standards and policies for monitoring, evaluation, renewal, suspension and revocation. This position will monitor, track, and report to the Director and Deputy Director on areas of charter school performance identified as not meeting the performance expectations set forth in the charter school performance framework approved by the PEC.
How does it get done?
Serve as team member and team lead on charter school annual site visits (25%)
Conduct desktop monitoring and analyze school performance relative to the school's contract and performance framework (20%)
Analyze charter school renewal applications and conduct site visits to schools seeking renewal (10%)
Track renewal conditions as part of the annual process (10%)
Document charter school performance and write annual performance reports and renewal recommendations (10%)
Review charter school requests to amend the charter contract requests from existing charter schools provide feedback, technical assistance to support schools in meeting PEC policy requirements; contribute to the written analysis and recommendations to the PEC on Amendment requests (10%)
Lead peer review team review of new charter school applications; contribute to new application analysis and recommendation (5%)
Review newly authorized schools' implementation year checklist submissions to ensure alignment with law and provide recommendations for best practices (10%)

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration, or Business Administration and four (4) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and cell phone usage with extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Travel around the state and out of state for conferences is required.
