Job Status: This is a contract position & can be either part time or full time. HRDC also has a "Wellness Hours Policy" which encourages full-time staff to use up to 4 paid hours weekly to work on their wellness.
Wage: $27.50/hour
Shifts: Variable nights and weekends
General Summary of Purpose of this Position:
This role is responsible for ensuring a safe, respectful, and secure environment for all customers, volunteers, partners, and staff by managing facility access, conducting regular safety checks, responding to incidents, and promoting adherence to HRDC policies through the use of trauma-informed practices and de-escalation techniques. The Security Lead also assists with customer belongings, monitors security systems, and coordinates with first responders when necessary.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Customer Management (40%)
Welcome and screen all shelter guests during check-in
Use magnetometers and other tools to ensure an environment free of weapons and prohibited items, such as substances
Build positive rapport with customers through compassionate, respectful, and professional customer service, while remaining attentive to behavioral cues
Encourage and reinforce alignment with agency policies and procedures consistently and supportively
2. Safety and Security Operations (30%)
Conduct regular and randomized walk-throughs and locker checks to support overall safety and situational awareness, including identifying potential hazards or unsafe behaviors
Protect people and property by remaining alert to signs of fire, vandalism, theft, or unauthorized entry, and communicate concerns through proper channels
Perform regular safety rounds in common areas, including restrooms, stairwells, kitchens, and shared spaces, to help ensure a clean, secure, and trauma-informed setting
Monitor surveillance, intrusion, and fire systems
Assist in evacuations or other emergency procedures as needed
Protect all assigned equipment and resources responsibly
3. Support and Coordination (25%)
Assist in managing and organizing guest belongings within storage areas, ensuring secure and equitable access to lockers following Guest Services guidelines
Support a welcoming and calm environment at reception and throughout the facility, providing presence and intervention when needed to maintain physical and emotional safety
4. Organizational Engagement (5%)
- Attends monthly all-staff meetings
- Reads employee communications and weekly newsletters
Required Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities that are required for success in this position.
Experience:
2 years of work experience in crisis de-escalation or security/safety-related roles, or similar
1-2 years of experience providing a high level of support to a diverse customer base, maintaining professionalism and responsiveness across various channels
Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally
1 year of experience using a wide range of computer systems, office equipment, and standard office procedures
Skills/Knowledge:
Commitment to utilizing a trauma-informed approach to safety and security measures
Demonstrates high ethical standards and professionalism in all interactions
Strong organizational skills; ability to prioritize tasks and work independently while contributing to a collaborative team
Excellent listener and communicator, both written and verbal; ability to complete documentation with clarity and accuracy
Brings compassion and cultural humility to interactions with people from a range of different backgrounds
Ability to read, interpret, and implement documents such as governmental regulations, rules, and procedure manuals
Basic math skills
Willingness to participate in all required safety and security training

Flexible and reliable in scheduling, including availability for weekends and late nights

This position operates under general supervision.
