We're looking for an experienced, compassionate, and creative Special Education Teacher who thrives in individualized instruction and enjoys building curriculum from the ground up.
Position Overview
The Special Education Homeschool Teacher will provide one-on-one instruction to students with a variety of learning needs while developing personalized curriculum and educational plans. This role requires someone who is flexible, organized, and passionate about helping students of all ages reach their full potential.
Responsibilities
- Provide individualized homeschool instruction for students from preschool through high school.
- Design and implement customized curriculum based on each student's academic level, learning style, IEP goals, and interests.
- Create engaging lesson plans that incorporate hands-on, project-based, and evidence-based learning strategies.
- Adapt instruction for students with autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, developmental delays, learning disabilities, and other exceptional needs.
- Conduct ongoing academic assessments and monitor student progress.
- Develop learning goals and individualized educational plans in collaboration with families.
- Support executive functioning, emotional regulation, social-emotional learning, and life skills alongside academics.
- Incorporate community-based instruction, vocational readiness, and functional life skills when appropriate.
- Maintain organized documentation, progress notes, and educational records.
- Collaborate with parents, therapists, physicians, and other providers to ensure consistency across services.
- Participate in family consultations, observations, and transition planning for new students.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, successes, and areas of growth.
- Stay current on special education best practices, accommodations, and curriculum resources.
QualificationsRequired
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or a related education field.
- Current teaching license or eligibility for licensure (preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working with students with special needs.
- Experience teaching students across multiple age groups, from early childhood through high school.
- Strong experience creating individualized curriculum and lesson plans rather than relying solely on packaged programs.
- Knowledge of IEP development, accommodations, differentiated instruction, and evidence-based interventions.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to families' homes within the service area.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple students and schedules.
Preferred
- Experience with homeschool education or alternative educational settings.
- Familiarity with NC Standard Course of Study and extended content standards.
- Experience with executive functioning coaching.
- Knowledge of autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, behavior supports, AAC, and social skills instruction.
- Experience supporting transition planning, vocational skills, or life skills education.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
