JOB PURPOSE:
Under general supervision, performs duties in food services to include food preparation, cooking, serving and delivering meals inside the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice facilities. Cleans assigned areas of food services to meet guidelines and standards set by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Provide excellent customer service and continually assessing performance based on customer feedback.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Organizes storage, preparation and serving of food and the maintenance of food service equipment and facilities.

Prepares and cooks menu items according to established recipes and production schedules.

Ensure food quality, taste, appearance and portion control standards are consistently met by demonstrating correct cooking techniques of food preparation.

Inspects dry stores and refrigerated food to ensure optimum storage conditions.

Operates all kitchen equipment safely and efficiently to produce consistent meals.

Informs leadership of any issues that would prevent safe operation.

Cleans equipment and all areas of the food service department to established standards and schedules.

Follow work schedules and training programs as assigned by DJJ and the kitchen manager.

Works in the presence of inmates.

Utilizes state vehicles to transport inmate labor to and from DJJ as well as prepared meals to all DJJ feeding locations.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the kitchen manager and shift lead.
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A high school diploma and some experience in quantity and quality cooking.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of storage, preparation and service of various food products.

Knowledge of principles and procedures of food service materials and appliances used in a kitchen/bakery.

Knowledge of sanitary and safety procedures pertaining to kitchen operation and/or general food preparation and service.

Must have time management and organizational skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, ability to maintain a professional and positive attitude, and excellent teamwork and communication skills.

Ability to maintain food service records and prepare written and digital reports.

General knowledge and skill level with Microsoft office products.
This is considered an essential position.
This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
Exposure to hazardous equipment, extreme heat and freezing temperatures.
Must be flexible to work alternating weekends, holidays and rotating shifts if necessary.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
AGENCY PREFERRED:
A high school diploma and one year of food services experience in quantity and quality cooking. Must possess Serv Safe Food Handlers Certification or the ability to complete the test with at least a 70 (passing score) within 6 months from the date of hire.
