Treat Plant Helper
Job Overview
Join a dynamic, industry-leading team as a Treat Plant Helper. In this role, your energy, mechanical aptitude, and attention to detail will directly impact our production efficiency. You will assist with the operation of woodworking machinery, handle raw materials safely, and support the overall workflow of our wood-treating plant.
This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals eager to develop their skills in industrial machining, material handling, and manufacturing operations within a supportive, safety-first environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Loading Railroad Cars, Trucks, and Trams: The yard handles massive volumes of heavy wood. You will be physically loading or using heavy machinery to pack utility poles and lumber onto transport vehicles. "Trams" are the specialized steel carts that roll on tracks directly inside the massive pressurized chemical treatment cylinders.
- Operating Hand-Held Switches: This refers to operating the track switches in the yard. Because trams and rail cars move along physical tracks throughout the property, a helper manually shifts the track switches to guide the lumber carts to the right area (like moving a charge from the yard into the treatment cylinder).
- Inspecting Binders and Cables: Before the massive batch of poles goes into the pressurized cylinder, they are strapped down tightly. You must inspect these heavy-duty cables and binders to ensure they won't snap under intense hydraulic pressure.
- Moving and Storing Charges: You will assist the primary Treating Engineer in moving these loaded trams into the cylinder, sealing it, and pulling them back out to dry once the chemical cycle is complete.
- Counting Poles & Inventory: Wood treating is a precise numbers game. You will perform regular physical yard audits, counting treated and untreated utility poles to ensure inventory records match what has been processed.
- Yard and System Cleanup: Chemical wood treatment produces industrial residue. A key part of the helper's job is maintaining a clean, hazard-free yard and washing down the processing systems to stay compliant with strict environmental and safety codes.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Previous experience in a sawmill, wood-treating plant, heavy manufacturing, or industrial outdoor environment is highly desirable.
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with basic machinery operation, hand/power tools, and a strong mechanical aptitude.
- Precision: Ability to accurately read a tape measure and use basic precision measurement tools. Knowledge of basic math for production calculations is required.
- Equipment: Previous forklift operation or material handling experience is a strong plus.
- Background: Experience in construction, carpentry, or millwork translates perfectly to this role.
- Mindset: A strong commitment to workplace safety, a desire to learn new skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
