The Summer Discovery Teacher is responsible for leading engaging educational sessions for Detroit PAL’s Summer Discovery Program using an evidence-based curriculum designed for students entering 1st through 8th grade.
This role helps create a fun, supportive, and structured learning environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, and personal growth while reinforcing essential academic skills in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.
Summer Discovery Teachers play a key role in helping Detroit PAL deliver high-quality youth enrichment programming that supports academic success, confidence building and positive youth development.

Plan and facilitate daily educational sessions in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math using an evidencebased curriculum.

Deliver engaging lessons that reinforce core academic skills through interactive learning, projects, and handson activities.

Adapt instruction to meet the varying learning needs of students in grades 18.

Manage a classroom of up to a maximum of 18 youth in a structured, supportive environment.

Establish clear expectations that promote respect, responsibility, and active participation.

Maintain a safe and positive classroom atmosphere that encourages student engagement and collaboration.

Create a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where all students feel supported and valued.

Encourage curiosity, creativity, and problemsolving through interactive learning experiences.

Support the development of students’ confidence, teamwork, and communication skills.

Collaborate with site staff, program coordinators, and leadership to support overall program goals.

Maintain regular communication with program coordinators regarding student engagement, participation, and progress.

Participate in staff meetings and program activities as required.

Participate in a mandatory oneweek training prior to the start of the program (paid).

Prepare lesson plans and materials in alignment with the Summer Discovery curriculum and program schedule.

Michigan Certified Teacher or currently enrolled in a teacher preparation program for Childhood Education.

Strong classroom management and youth engagement skills.

Ability to plan and lead structured learning activities for groups of up to a maximum of 18 students.

Experience in summer learning, enrichment programs, or youth development programs.

Experience working with diverse youth populations.

Ability to incorporate creative and interactive teaching methods into lessons.

Commitment to the mission and values of Detroit PAL.

Ability to pass required background screening and youth protection requirements.

Reliable transportation to assigned program location.

Ability to stand, move around the classroom, and actively engage with students throughout the program day.

Occasional outdoor activities may be required.
