Cottonwood Heights is seeking a customer-focused and detail-oriented Planning Technician to join our Community & Economic Development Department. This position plays a key role in supporting the City's planning, zoning, permitting, and development review processes while serving as a primary point of contact for residents, contractors, developers, and business owners.

As a Planning Technician, you will:

Assist residents, contractors, developers, and businesses with planning, zoning, permitting, and land use inquiries.

Receive, review, and process planning, zoning, subdivision, site plan, variance, sign permit, and other development applications.

Review applications for completeness and compliance with City ordinances and development standards.

Coordinate application reviews between departments and track project progress.

Process building permits, calculate fees, issue permits, and coordinate inspections.

Prepare public notices, meeting agendas, staff reports, and Planning Commission packets.

Conduct zoning and land use research and assist with planning projects and ordinance updates.

Maintain department records, databases, websites, and permit tracking systems.

Provide exceptional customer service both in person and electronically.
We're looking for candidates who are organized, customer-service oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong candidates will possess:

Knowledge of municipal planning, zoning, permitting, and land use processes.

Experience reviewing permits, development applications, or related records.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to interpret municipal codes, site plans, maps, and technical documents.

Experience working with Microsoft Office, permit management software, GIS, Bluebeam, Adobe products, or related software.

Ability to establish positive working relationships with residents, developers, contractors, and coworkers.

Associate's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field; and
-
Two (2) years of experience in planning, zoning administration, permitting, development review, or a related field.
OR
-
Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field.
OR
-
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid Utah Driver License.

Ability to type at least 40 words per minute.

Ability to attend occasional evening meetings.
