JOB TITLE: Certified Nursing Assistant
REPORTS TO: Registered Nurse/Clinical Supervisor/Clinical Administrator
JOB SUMMARY
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides supportive patient care and clinical assistance in the preoperative, postoperative, and procedure areas under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The CNA assists with patient preparation, observation, comfort, mobility, vital signs, environmental readiness, and other delegated patient-care activities within demonstrated competency and authorized scope.
The CNA works collaboratively with the RN, Clinical Supervisor, Clinical Administrator, physicians, anesthesia providers, and other members of the healthcare team to support safe patient care, efficient patient flow, and a positive patient experience.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Current Wyoming Certified Nursing Assistant certification. A temporary nursing assistant certification may be accepted, but the permanent certification must be obtained prior to the expiration date of the temporary license.
EXPERIENCE
Previous ambulatory surgery, hospital, clinic, or other patient-care experience preferred.

- Ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, nurses, physicians, anesthesia providers, and other Center personnel.
- Must possess an understanding of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of surgical nursing principles.
- Knowledge of aseptic technique and infection control principles.
- Able to perform effectively in highly stressful situations.
- Must be well-motivated, organized, accurate, attentive to detail, timely, and dependable, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple assigned tasks effectively.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Effective computer and keyboarding skills.
- Must have ability to learn and use Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Outlook.
- Ability to learn new computer software applications.
- Demonstrates clinical competency appropriate to the CNA role in an ambulatory patient-care setting.
- Ability to obtain accurate vital signs, observe patients, and promptly communicate findings or changes in condition to the RN.
- Ability to follow directions, delegated assignments, policies, and established patient-care processes.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
BLS (AHA)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide assigned supportive patient care under the direction and supervision of an RN and within CNA scope, demonstrated competency, and policy.
- Obtain and document vital signs and other assigned patient information accurately and promptly report abnormal findings or changes in patient condition to the RN.
- Assist patients with preparation for procedures, positioning, mobility, transfers, comfort measures, and other activities as directed by the RN.
- Observe patients during assigned care activities and promptly communicate symptoms, concerns, or changes in condition to the RN.
- Assist nurses and physicians with patient-care activities and procedures as directed and within authorized scope and demonstrated competency.
- Support efficient patient flow by assisting with room readiness, patient transport, stocking, turnover activities, and other assigned clinical support functions.
- Maintain assigned patient-care areas in a clean, safe, organized, appropriately stocked, and ready condition.
- Operate and assist with medical and office equipment only when appropriately trained and competency validated.
- Complete assigned checklists, documentation, and tasks accurately and within the assigned shift.
- Follow established emergency procedures, immediately notify licensed clinical personnel of patient concerns, and assist with emergency response as directed.
- Follow infection-prevention, standard precautions, bloodborne-pathogen, hazardous-material, sharps-safety, environmental cleaning, and personal protective equipment requirements.
- Protect patient rights, privacy, dignity, and confidentiality and maintain the confidentiality of Center information.
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), infection prevention, safety, emergency preparedness, staff education, meetings, and other Center activities as assigned.
- Promote professional communication, teamwork, respect, accountability, and a positive patient and physician experience.
- Assist in other areas of the Center when appropriately trained and competency-validated and when consistent with CNA certification and authorized responsibilities.
- Perform other supportive patientcare and clinical responsibilities as delegated by the RN, Clinical Supervisor, or Clinical Administrator and appropriate to the individual's education, certification, training, competency, and scope.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
- Maintains awareness of the patient's and family's need for emotional support and understanding. Communicates pertinent psychosocial information to RN/LPN.
- Listens to patient's concerns and make sure the patient and family understands treatments and procedures.
- Responds to call lights by answering at the unit clerk’s desk, and/or responding directly to patient rooms.
- Ensure general tidiness on units, including putting away supplies, storing equipment, emptying trash, tidying family nutrition room and waiting area.
- Regularly attend department meetings and educational in-services.
- Maintains positive and professional attitude towards co-workers, patients and visitors.
- Participates in in-service education programs, monthly staff meetings, and committee assignments.
- Assists in training and orientation of new personnel.
- Works with other staff members in completing routine paperwork duties.
- Maintains competency skills as directed.
- Performs other duties as assigned and individual is qualified to perform within the CNA scope.
