Medical Assistant
The Blair Academy J. Brooks Hoffman ’36 Health Center has openings for a part-time medical assistant (MA) to provide direct care to students. The successful candidate will possess exceptional communication and assessment skills, a strong desire to support the health and well-being of the Blair community, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a healthcare team in a fast-paced environment under the supervision of an RN or LPN. This position is non-exempt, essential and reports directly to the Director of Health Services.
Duties & responsibilities
Patient care
- Provide basic patient care, first aid and support to students receiving services in the Health Center;
- Obtain and document vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, height and weight;
- Monitor students and promptly report changes, concerns or abnormal findings to nursing staff; and
- Observe and document student behaviors, symptoms and responses to care.
Clinical support
- Assist nurses with patient admission, discharge and routine care;
- Prepare patient rooms and treatment areas for use;
- Clean patient rooms and common care areas, following all school safety protocols;
- Change bed linens and maintain a clean, organized environment;
- Stock and organize medical supplies, linens and equipment; and
- Assist with meal service and monitor student dietary intake as directed.
Documentation
- Accurately document care, observations and completed tasks in the electronic health record (EHR) system in accordance with Health Center policies; and
- Maintain confidentiality of student health information in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA and Blair policies.
Transportation & student support
- Transport students to off-campus medical appointments as assigned;
- Support student safety and well-being during transportation and appointments; and
- Communicate professionally with students, families, healthcare providers and School personnel.
General responsibilities
- Follow all Health Center policies, procedures and infection-control standards;
- Maintain current CNA certification and required training;
- Participate in staff meetings, training and emergency preparedness activities;
- Promote a supportive, respectful and student-centered environment; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & skills
- Current MA certification in the state of New Jersey (required);
- Current CPR certification;
- Experience working with adolescents, pediatric patients or in a school setting (preferred);
- Willingness to work varying weekly hours based on the needs of the Health Center;
- Excellent written and verbal skills; and
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record required.
Physical requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift and assist patients throughout the workday;
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation; and
- Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
Salary & other compensation
Base pay range $19-23 per hour. Salary depends on numerous factors, including but not limited to education and experience.
