Job Summary:
The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of passengers, in accordance with New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) regulations. This position requires strict adherence to safety protocols, excellent driving skills, and strong interpersonal communication.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate a school or transit bus along designated routes or field trips as scheduled.
- Ensure the safety of all passengers during boarding, transit, and exiting the bus and or van.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle is in safe operating condition.
- Maintain order and discipline on the bus and or van, following district or company policies.
- Report any incidents, accidents, or vehicle malfunctions to the transportation office immediately.
- Keep accurate records of mileage, routes, maintenance, and passenger counts as required.
- Follow all traffic laws, DOT regulations, and company/district policies.
- Assist passengers with disabilities or special needs as required.
- Attend required safety and training sessions.
Qualifications:
- Minimum Age: 21 years old
- License: Valid New York State Commercial Driver's License (CDL- C) with a Passenger (P)endorsement, if applicable
- Experience: Prior bus driving experience preferred but not always required
- Clean driving record and ability to pass a NYS DOT physical, drug screening, and background check
- Strong understanding of NYS traffic laws and safety regulations
- Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions in stressful situations
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
Working Conditions:
- Early morning and/or split shifts
- Exposure to all weather conditions
- Sitting for extended periods and occasional physical assistance to passengers
Additional Requirements:
- Must pass a fingerprint background check through the NYS Education Department (for school bus drivers)
- Ongoing participation in NYS 19-A driver evaluation program (for school transportation roles)
- Annual physical performance and vision tests
- Periodic in-service training as mandated by NYS DMV regulations
