Position Summary
The Safety Director is responsible for leading and continuously improving Blue Star Gas’s safety and regulatory compliance programs across all operations. This role builds a proactive safety culture by ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements; designing and delivering new-hire safety and role-based field training; providing ongoing refresher training aligned with industry best practices; and overseeing safety incident reporting, tracking, investigation, and corrective actions. The Safety Director also develops and manages a Division Safety Champion program and serves as the primary internal resource for all safety-related activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Regulatory compliance leadership: Own and maintain the company safety compliance framework, including applicable OSHA requirements, DOT/FMCSA (as applicable), EPA/CalARP (as applicable), NFPA/LP-Gas codes and standards (as applicable), and state/local requirements; coordinate regulatory inspections, audits, and agency interactions; and ensure timely completion of required postings, recordkeeping, and submissions.
- Policies, programs, and procedures: Develop, implement, and periodically revise safety policies, standard operating procedures, and safe work practices; ensure documents are accessible, version-controlled, and effectively communicated to the field and office teams.
- New hire field training: Design and deliver new-hire safety orientation and initial training plans; verify required training is completed prior to independent work; and partner with HR and Operations to ensure onboarding and documentation are consistent and audit-ready.
- Role-based field training: Build and manage role-based training and qualification pathways for drivers, service technicians, installation teams, plant/yard personnel, and other operational roles; establish field coaching, mentoring, and competency verification (including checklists, signoffs, and periodic requalification).
- Ongoing/refresher training: Maintain an annual training calendar and deliver or coordinate recurrent training (e.g., defensive driving, hazard communication, PPE, lockout/tagout where applicable, ladder/fall prevention, propane/LP-gas specific topics, emergency response, and seasonal operations); ensure training content reflects lessons learned, trends, and changing regulations.
- Incident reporting, tracking, and oversight: Manage the end-to-end incident process for near misses, property damage, injuries/illnesses, vehicle incidents, and safety concerns—ensuring prompt reporting, thorough investigation, root-cause analysis, corrective/preventive action (CAPA) assignment, and follow-up to closure.
- Claims management: Lead the claims process with our insurance companies and respective state organizations to ensure proper employee support and regulatory compliance.
- Metrics and performance management: Define and track leading and lagging indicators (e.g., training completion, inspections, near-miss reporting, TRIR/DART where applicable); prepare dashboards and regular updates for leadership; and use data to drive targeted interventions.
- Division Safety Champion program: Establish and lead a network of Division Safety Champions; define roles/responsibilities, meeting cadence, and communication channels; provide tools and training for champions; recognize performance; and escalate risks and resource needs.
- Field engagement and inspections: Conduct routine site/ride-alongs, jobsite observations, and facility/vehicle inspections; partner with Operations leaders to address hazards; and verify corrective actions and equipment readiness.
- Contractor and vendor safety: Define safety expectations for contractors/vendors; support prequalification and onboarding; and verify safe work practices when contractors are on company sites or performing work on behalf of Blue Star Gas.
- Emergency preparedness: Maintain emergency response plans and drills (as applicable); support incident command coordination with Operations; and ensure required spill/release and other notifications are completed when necessary.
- Training records and documentation: Maintain accurate, confidential, and audit-ready training, inspection, and incident records; administer learning management tools (if used) and standard forms; and ensure retention schedules are met.
- Cross-functional partnership: Collaborate with Operations, HR, Fleet, and Facilities to embed safety into planning, staffing, equipment purchasing, and operational changes; provide guidance to leaders on corrective action, coaching, and accountability.
- Continuous improvement: Lead periodic risk assessments, program reviews, and internal audits; recommend and implement improvements to reduce risk and improve efficiency; and stay current on industry standards and best practices.
- Other duties as assigned: Perform all other safety-related activities required to support safe operations at Blue Star Gas.
