Job Summary:
As the Equipment Operator, Construction, you will ultimately be responsible for operating heavy construction equipment, supporting underground utility construction activities, and ensuring safe and efficient project execution. You will coordinate with construction crews to install underground infrastructure, maintain equipment, and deliver quality workmanship while following company and customer safety standards. As the Equipment Operator, your customers are project managers, foremen, construction crews, clients, and utility partners, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe equipment operation, dependable field support, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
- Communicate effectively with Project Managers, Foremen, Crew Leaders, and Laborers regarding daily work activities
- Operate tamping machines and heavy equipment in accordance with project specifications and safe operating procedures
- Perform daily equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, and complete required inspection documentation
- Load and unload jobsite materials, equipment, and supplies
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas
- Inspect and safely operate hand tools and construction equipment
- Operate equipment including track hoes, backhoes, mini excavators, skid steers, dozers, haul trucks, and other construction equipment
- Excavate and backfill trenches for underground utility installations in a safe and efficient manner
- Operate safely around existing underground utilities
- Work effectively using hand signals and communicate with ground personnel
- Install and utilize trench protection and shoring systems
- Perform rigging and setting of underground structures
- Assist with placement of conduit, proofing conduits, potholing existing utilities, concrete work, and asphalt restoration as needed
- Maintain company vehicles and equipment in a safe operating condition
- Ensure compliance with customer requirements and company quality standards
- Promote and maintain compliance with all company safety policies and procedures
- Complete required annual safety training
- Participate in required drug screening programs
- Report injuries, incidents, and unsafe conditions promptly
- Maintain clean and organized jobsites at the conclusion of each workday
- Coordinate daily work activities according to project plans and specifications
- Perform assigned work within project scope while identifying work outside the scope when applicable
- Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs
Required Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
- OSHA knowledge and compliance with construction safety requirements
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment in underground utility construction
- Experience excavating and working around existing utilities
- Experience with trench protection and basic shoring systems
- Experience interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and blueprints
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to safely operate heavy construction equipment and related machinery
- Strong understanding of OSHA regulations, construction procedures, and equipment safety
- Ability to work effectively with construction crews while assisting with manual labor activities as needed
- Strong customer service, communication, and teamwork skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans
- Strong organizational, documentation, and time management skills
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding work
- Excellent manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and visual acuity
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of heavy equipment operating experience
- Experience excavating around live utilities
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Computer proficiency
- OSHA 30 Certification
- Trench and Excavation Safety / Competent Person Training
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physically demanding work throughout the workday
- Ability to safely operate heavy construction equipment for extended periods
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to travel locally to multiple project sites as business needs require
- Ability to perform manual labor while supporting construction crews
