Machine Shop Lead Overview
R&H Machine is looking for an experienced Machine Shop Lead to help oversee the day-to-day operations of our machine shop. We are a busy machine and fabrication shop handling a variety of custom, repair, and production work, so this position requires someone who understands machining, can keep multiple jobs moving, and is comfortable leading and working alongside experienced machinists.
This is a hands-on leadership position. We are looking for someone who can help organize workflow, answer machining questions, troubleshoot problems on the floor, monitor quality and productivity, and make sure jobs are being completed safely and correctly.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily machine shop operations and help coordinate workflow among machinists
- Assign and prioritize work based on job requirements and production schedules
- Monitor jobs throughout production to help keep work on schedule
- Provide guidance and troubleshooting assistance to machinists when needed
- Work with both CNC and manual machining operations, including mills and lathes
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and job specifications
- Assist with machine setups, tooling selection, speeds and feeds, and machining processes
- Verify parts using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and other precision measuring equipment
- Ensure completed work meets customer specifications and quality requirements
- Identify production issues and work with the team to find practical solutions
- Help maintain an organized, efficient, and safe shop environment
- Communicate with management regarding job progress, scheduling concerns, material needs, and production issues
- Help train and develop machinists as needed
- Promote accountability, quality workmanship, and productivity throughout the machine shop
Qualifications
- Strong hands-on experience in a machine shop environment
- Experience with both CNC and manual machining preferred
- Strong understanding of mills, lathes, tooling, setups, speeds and feeds, and machining processes
- Ability to read and understand mechanical blueprints and machining tolerances
- Proficient with precision measuring equipment
- CNC programming and troubleshooting experience is preferred
- Strong mechanical and problem-solving skills
- Previous lead, supervisor, or shop management experience preferred
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple jobs in a fast-paced shop environment
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Must be willing to step in and assist on the shop floor when needed
